Need help with a puzzle.

Can someone please explain exactly how you work out the answer to this puzzle? The number of candles on Roger’s birthday cake is four less than three times a half of the number fourteen years ago. How old is Roger?

Since we are given that Roger's age is 4 less than three times a half of his age 14 years ago, then this tells us that:

It is more a mathematical problem of algebra than a puzzle.
