Re: Area by integration

It looks okay, if you want to get a picture in here you must use some image hosting site.

Yes, that will be okay.

Then take and put the address between the "" tags.

Re: Area by integration

Oh done, thank u very much.

It is not written in the help page in miff. Then how did u cum 2 no it?

can u name me some more image hosting sites. Cant this be uploaded here without any image hosting site?

Re: Area by integration

It needs an image hosting site, you can not directly upload an image here.

Then how did u cum 2 no it

The EM way of doing things is powerful in all fields not just math.

But you did not answer the question.

Re: Area by integration

you mean the question that Zeeshan01 asked? Oh he wants to find the area of the 2 curves that cross the X- axis. I see you got a different graph. How did you get that graph?

Re: Area by integration

You can get it with Mathematica, Wolfram Alpha or Geogebra.

Re: Area by integration

But, I got the above graph... Anyway, the answer would be finite in my graph and in your graph the answer would be infinite, so you were asking zeeshan for the limits in post #2.

Re: Area by integration

That is correct without an interval given the shaded area can not be drawn. The question is either been truncated or it is just plain wrong.

Most likely the interval is [-2,2]

Re: Area by integration

I think it is the sum of areas of [-2,0] and [0,2] according to my graph.

Re: Area by integration

Judging by the questions that some of today's teachers ask it is impossible to second guess them.

Re: Area by integration

This is what I would do:

7mrOwWZ.png

But you should be able to see that unless I am given an interval for x I can not really plot the figure. It is impossible to graph from - infinity to infinity.

Re: Area by integration

Zeeshan 01 wrote:

Find the area bounded by the curve y=x^3-4x and the x axis

Also we have an earlier post about factorising quadratics.  Putting these together, I think the expectation is (1) factorise the quadratic (2) identify the area formed by the curve and the x axis (3) use integration to determine this area.

There are several plots already in this thread showing this curve.

Usually an additional piece of information is given, such as x > 0, which would make the interval [0,2]

But without that, taking two intervals [-2,0] and [0,2] seems reasonable.

What you mustn't do is

as the negative part will exactly cancel the positive part, giving an incorrect answer of zero.

Better to do
