Re: Doc, Doc!

Hi bobbym,

#918. Name the medical term / phrase : One of the human body's master cells, with the ability to grow into any one of the body's more than 200 cell types. All these are unspecialized (undifferentiated) cells that are characteristically of the same family type (lineage). They retain the ability to divide throughout life and give rise to cells that can become highly specialized and take the place of cells that die or are lost. They contribute to the body's ability to renew and repair its tissues. Unlike mature cells, which are permanently committed to their fate, they can both renew themselves as well as create new cells of whatever tissue they belong to (and other tissues).

Hi bobbym,

The Answer #918 is correct! Neat work!

#919.Name the antibiotic used to treat bladder infections. It is not effective for kidney infections. It is taken by mouth. Common side effects include nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and headaches. Rarely numbness, lung problems, or liver problems may occur. It should not be used in people with kidney problems. While it looks like it is generally safe during pregnancy it should not be used near delivery. It works by slowing growth rather than killing bacteria. has been available for the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs) since 1953. Its current uses include the treatment of uncomplicated UTIs and prophylaxis against UTIs in people prone to recurrent UTIs. It was first sold in 1953. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most important medications needed in a basic health system.

Re: Doc, Doc!

Hi bobbym,

#920. What does the abbreviation DMD signify? (It is a rare muscle disorder but it is one of the most frequent genetic conditions affecting approximately 1 in 3,500 male births worldwide. It is usually recognized between three and six years of age. DMD is characterized by weakness and wasting (atrophy) of the muscles of the pelvic area followed by the involvement of the shoulder muscles. As the disease progresses, muscle weakness and atrophy spread to affect the trunk and forearms and gradually progress to involve additional muscles of the body. The disease is progressive and most affected individuals require a wheelchair by the teenage years. Serious life-threatening complications may ultimately develop including disease of the heart muscle (cardiomyopathy) and breathing (respiratory) difficulties.)

Re: Doc, Doc!

Hi David and bobbym,

The Answer # 920 (Dunchenne Muscular Dystrophy) is correct, David and bobbym! Splendid and Good work respectively!

#921. Name the medical term / phrase : (IBD) : A group of inflammatory conditions of the colon and small intestine. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are the principal types of these. It is important to note that not only does Crohn's disease affect the small intestine and large intestine, it can also affect the mouth, esophagus, stomach and the math whereas ulcerative colitis primarily affects the colon and the rectum.  It  falls into the class of autoimmune diseases, in which the body's own immune system attacks elements of the digestive system.

Re: Doc, Doc!

Hi David,

The Answer #921

is correct! Excellent, David!

#922. Name the medical term / phrase -  They are the seven cylindrical bones, or vertebral bodies (C1-C7), that provide support and structure for the cervical spine. The vertebral body is the large portion of the bone that lies anterior (in front of) the spinal cord. The vertebrae get smaller as they near the base of the skull and only the top two segments allow for rotation in the neck. The top cervical segment, called the atlas, is a ring that does not have a vertebral body. The atlas is attached to the second vertebral body (the axis), which acts as a post that the first vertebral ring rotates around. The segments in the cervical spine contain openings in each vertebral body for arteries to carry blood to the brain(vertebral foramen).

Re: Doc, Doc!

Hi bobbym and David,

By oversight, I have given the question instead of answer . Excuse me!

#923. Name the medical phrase : (TTTS) is a disease of the placenta (or afterbirth) that affects identical twin pregnancies. TTTS affects identical twins (or higher multiple gestations), who share a common monochorionic placenta. The shared placenta contains abnormal blood vessels, which connect the umbilical cords and circulations of the twins. The common placenta may also be shared unequally by the twins, and one twin may have a share too small to provide the necessary nutrients to grow normally or even survive.  The events in pregnancy that lead to TTTS - the timing of the twinning event, the number and type of connecting vessels, and the way the placenta is shared by the twins are all random events that have no primary prevention , is not hereditary or genetic, nor is it caused by anything the parents did or did not do. TTTS can happen to anyone.

Re: Doc, Doc!

Hi bobbym,

The solution #93 (Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS)) is perfect, bobbym! Marvelous!

#924. Name the medical term : an enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of starch into sugars. It is present in the saliva of humans and some other mammals, where it begins the chemical process of digestion. Foods that contain large amounts of starch but little sugar, such as rice and potatoes, may acquire a slightly sweet taste as they are chewed because this degrades some of their starch into sugar. The pancreas and salivary gland make it to hydrolyse dietary starch into disaccharides and trisaccharides which are converted by other enzymes to glucose to supply the body with energy. Plants and some bacteria also produce this. As diastase, it was the first enzyme to be discovered and isolated (by Anselme Payen in 1833).

Re: Doc, Doc!

Hi bobbym,

The Answer #924 is correct! Excellent!

#925. What does FEF signify? (It is the flow (or speed) of air coming out of the lung during the middle portion of a forced expiration. It can be given at discrete times, generally defined by what fraction remains of the forced vital capacity (FVC). The usual intervals are 25%, 50% and 75% (FEF25, FEF50 and FEF75), or 25% and 50% of FVC. It can also be given as a mean of the flow during an interval, also generally delimited by when specific fractions remain of FVC, usually 25–75% (FEF25–75%). Average ranges in the healthy population depend mainly on gender and age, with FEF25–75% shown in diagram at left. Values ranging from 50-60% and up to 130% of the average are considered normal. Predicted normal values for FEF can be calculated online and depend on age, gender, height, mass and ethnicity as well as the research study that they are based on.)

Hi David and bobbym,

The Answer #925 (Forced expiratory flow) is correct! Marvelous, David and bobbym!

#926. Name the medical term : The term refers to lymph nodes which are abnormal in size, number or consistency  and is often used as a synonym for swollen or enlarged lymph nodes. Common causes of are infection, autoimmune disease, or malignancy. Inflammation as a cause of lymph node enlargement is known as lymphadenitis. In practice, the distinction between this term and lymphadenitis is rarely made. Inflammation of the lymphatic vessels is also known as lymphangitis. Infectious lymphadenitides affecting lymph nodes in the neck are often called scrofula. The term comes from the word lymph and a combination of the Greek words αδένας, adenas ("gland") and παθεία, patheia ("act of suffering" or "disease"). Due to its peculiar high incidence, the presence  is a particularly important sign on the diagnosis of HIV or even, untreated later stages of the infection, AIDS.

Re: Doc, Doc!

Hi David and bobbym,

Marvelous, David! Good attempt, bobbym!

#927. Name the medical term - It  is a disorder of the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. This condition affects the ability of the esophagus to move food into the stomach.   Causes - There is a muscular ring at the point where the esophagus and stomach meet, called the lower esophageal sphincter. Normally, this muscle relaxes when you swallow. In people with this, it does not relax as well. In addition, the normal muscle activity of the esophagus (peristalsis) is reduced. This problem is caused by damage to the nerves of the esophagus.
Other problems can cause similar symptoms, such as cancer of the esophagus or upper stomach, and a parasite infection that causes Chagas disease. It is rare. It may occur at any age, but is most common in middle-aged or older adults. The problem may be inherited in some people.
