Re: Algebra help bad

A bit of a long question - but I can start helping you.

1. 27 is not a prime number, because it can be divided by 9 and 3. It is, however 3x3x3, or 3 cubed, so it is a cubic number.

3.  66 can't be a square number: 8x8=64, and 9x9=81, so 64 and 81 ARE, but 66 ISN'T

12. If it isn't prime it is composite (ignoring 1 which is a special case). 33 can be divided by 11 and 3, so ISN'T prime, so is COMPOSITE

14. 301 can be evenly divided by 7, so must be .....

18. GCF for 12, 18, 40: 12=2x2x3, 18=2x3x3, 40=2x2x2x5. They all have 2 in common, so GCF=2. (Can't get any better than 6,9,20)

20. 16MRT,30M SMALL2 - by "SMALL2" I imagine you are having difficulty writing "squared" - how about I write it as ^2, so rephrase that as:
16MRT, 30M^2. Well, the GCF of 16 and 30 is 2, and we can also see that one "M" is common. So the answer is 2M.

That is all I have time for at the moment, maybe someone else can do a bit?

Thank you for explaining to me how to do it.My teacher at school talks way to fast,and when I ask her one on one help she still talks to fast and I end up not understanding.

Re: Algebra help bad

Not a problem, eurasiangurl, here is another:

To solve algebra, you just have to move things around until it works out. A bit like a puzzle:

Let's try Problem No 56:
y(y+11)=0

Let's expand it out a little:
y times (y+11) =0 can be turned into:
y times y + y times 11 =0
or:
yy + y11 =0   , this is NOT the right way to write it down! so we will correct it to:

y^2 + 11y =0  (where y^2 means y-squared, or simply y times y)

Now, subtract 11y from both sides to get:
y^2 + 11y - 11y = 0 -11y
simplify it:
y^2 = -11y

Now, divide both sides by y:
y^2 /y = -11y /y
simplify:
y = -11

TA DA!

Just to be safe, let's check it:
y(y+11)=0
substitute "-11" for "y":
-11 times (-11 + 11) = 0
-11 times (0) = 0
0=0

Great, we got it

If there was a part of this you didn't follow, let me know.

That is a great avatar, eurasiangurl.

I used to teach at Uni. I can't give you one-on-one help, but feel free to post any questions and I or another member can respond. That way other people get to the chance to see questions and answers, or perhaps to correct me if I am wrong!

Re: Algebra help bad

I started the forum to give people a chance to discuss math problems, say good (or bad) things, share discoveries and generally express themselves. It is just good fun to help.

So, how are you getting on with your math? Give us another problem.

Re: Algebra help bad

to teach at uni you must need the correct qualidfications for example if you was to be a maths teacher you must have special grades and things *qualifications* in that subject.
also im not quite shure if this information is correct but i can only try:)

Re: Algebra help bad

Yeah, it is like teaching at Kinder it is all specialised on teaching skills, then as you go up the grades till Uni the emphasis slowly swaps over to knowing the subject you are teaching and less on your actual teaching skills.

As a result there can be really good teachers at Uni, and sometimes really bad ones who know their subject very well but have no ability to communicate it. I have studied under, and worked with, both!

A Uni job is not easy, but if you stay focused on helping the students it can be very rewarding.

Stay out of staff politics, though. By that I mean all the gossip and who is trying to take over whose job, and why this or that guy is really stupid with his theories, etc. But that advice applies to any job, really

except some jobs
i.e. cadets
* i am a cpl in cadets*
it begins learning the moi (method of instruction)
then as you learn more things you will teach them.
but you will get reminders and updates * if anything changes*
on your moi and things like that but also you may need certain qualifications such as pi qualification * physical instructor*
but otherwise it is like most jobs.

Re: Algebra help bad

Start with: 5g+h=g
Subtract g from both sides: 5g+h-g=g-g
Simplify: 4g+h=0
Subtract h from both sides: 4g+h-h = 0-h
Simplify: 4g=-h
Divide by 4: g=-h/4   DONE

See, we can solve stuff ... but you need to give us a bit of time smile

The slope would be -1/4 (or -4 depending on whether g goes up-down or left-right) - the easiest way to graph it would be to get some graph paper (duh!) and plot some points using the formula, and connect the points with a ruler.

For example, plot:

When h=8, then g=-2
When h=0 then g=0
When h=-8, then g=2

Re: Algebra help bad

For y(y+11)=0, surely y=0 as well?

Re: Algebra help bad

That is True!

But you should always be careful of zeros! Because zero times anything is zero. So I always work around them.

But in this case, YES, zero also works.

Re: Algebra help bad

y(y+11)=0, There have to be 2 possible solutions for this because it is square equation y^2+y11=0, so your explanation is incomplete.
y1,2=(-b+-sqrb^2-4ac)/2a. As c=0 > y1,2=(-11+-11)/2

1st y1=(-11-11)/2=-11         2nd y2=(-11+11)/2=0
This is longer and more complicated but it proofs that there are two solutions. When we meet such a problem I would suggest this:

y(y+a)=0 where a is known number   this equation can be correct when one of the agents =0

y=0     V      y+a=0
                   y=-a

Hi again, Milos. Yes, you are perfectly right! Careful of those x^2 terms!

BTW you could have a go at some of the other problems that eurasiangurl posted ... smile
