From Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Brad Neary: I don't understand these fractions.

Roy Neary: What's one third of sixty?

Brad Neary: [bewildered] That's a fraction, I don't understand them.

Roy Neary: [using a model train as an object lesson] Alright, let's say that this boxcar is sixty feet long, OK?, and one third of it is across this switch here, alright... And now another train is coming... Now, how far do you have to move this boxcar so that the other train doesn't smash it? Quickly Brad, there are thousands of lives at stake... Brad any answer...

[CRASH]

I suggest you watch the movie to get more. But the above scene is a classic. I actually see this happen on math forums all the time.

That's pretty bad. (i) It's not really a fractions question at all, just a divide by 3; (ii) what's the point of 'explaining' something by saying the same thing again; (iii) and how can you get your 'pupil' to think about the math when they're in a panic about all those people who are going to die?

So, the best quote, and the worst teaching style.

Oh! How could I have missed such a quality post?

Hah! I completely agree with Bob

WHat are these graphics? What is the question here?

They are showing a train collision with on object that is on the track.

Two tracks intersect. 1 / 3 of the boxcar is sitting on the intersection. He is being asked how far to move the boxcar so that it is clear of the track. He does not understand fractions.

It is not a question. Please ask the question in the form of a question.

Sorry, that is all you are given. That is all she was given, if I remember.

Usually a math problem ends with a question or a command. E.g, find the last ten digits of ....

'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it'

Nope, we are human beings not machines. I can not relate in how many ways this excerpt is related to what we do. I can only say that is already answered elsewhere.

But what is the question?

Hmmm, if I answer that I will be giving away the answer. Even if I explain further I will give the solution away.
