Mathematics is relied on by lots of fields. Without the basics of mathematics we wouldn't be able to quantify anything or do calculations. Science and many other fields depend on it. I know some applications of mathematics but only some. I would like people to state areas in which math is used and what math is used. Provide examples if you can please.

Geometry, ratio, proportions and percentages. is used constantly in construction. Plasterers, carpenters etc all use it.

I prefer pure mathematics over applied

There is no applied mathematics without pure mathematics.

Applications: every area of science

You can apply pure mathematics lol. You like to think it's all abstract and pure. The beauty of it is you can apply it to multiple areas.

You can't apply something that doesn't exist. Without the creation of theoretical mathematics, there would be no applications.

I think I agree with ShivamS that there is no application without theory. Maybe, math is one of those aspects of life we can't do without. Math is for everyone and math is everywhere.

Measurement/mensuration - cooking, sewing, cutting, painting, building, medicine (dosage)

Algebra - calculation, business, record keeping

Ratio and proportion - sharing and distribution of items: food, salaries, measurement

Calculus and graphs - business studies and economics

Sets - grouping and categorization

To mention a few I can think of

Only a friend tells you your face is dirty.

No offence, your idea of applications, especially that of measurements is ridiculous.

Mathematics can be applied to reality but we do not care.

Mathematics is no more useless than music, painting, rock-climbing or writing a good book. Are these things useless? Of course not!

You may have noticed this. There is a double standard going on against mathematics. You have never seen questions like “What are the real life applications of music?” or “What are the real life applications of reading good books?” But questions like “Why would anyone learn math? What are the real world applications of it?” are readily available everywhere. Why the double standards?

I view mathematics as an art form. It is not useless. I also do not believe that mathematics is important only because of its “practical applications”. Mathematics is not useful just because Gauss used it locate asteroids, or people now use it to encrypt stuff. The original appeal of mathematics does not lie there. Mathematics is useful in its own right and merit. Like I said, it’s an art form. And I shouldn't have to justify why I do mathematics.

That is just a round about way of saying he can not answer the question, "What is math good for?"

He cAnnot because he does not want to.

I know that, but can he answer the question? Supposing that was the bonus question on the Olympiad...

Read the last two lines of his rant

Hmmm, if he did EM he would know what math is good for and he would be able to answer every beginners question.

I do not agree with that view

Which view?

That everything has some purpose.

That may or may not be true, I do not know. The question was whether math does.

It is a subjective question

It does have an answer.
