JMC and IMC (or SMC) takers?!Tina here <3 #2 20131129 13:27:27
Re: JMC and IMC (or SMC) takers?!
It is hard but the best answer is to do them. As many as you can. Practice will improve your skills and take away the fear. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #3 20131130 04:17:42

Re: JMC and IMC (or SMC) takers?!I think she is talking about Junior, Intermediate and Senior Maths Challenges, run by UKMT. I used to sit those at school. If I remember correctly (I might be wrong), the JMC is done at age 1113, the IMC at 1416, and the SMC at 1618. Something like 2025 multiplechoice questions to do in 60 minutes, with a scoring system that penalised guessing, I think? #6 20131209 03:57:16
Re: JMC and IMC (or SMC) takers?!OMG, thank you! These UKMT things are so english. #7 20131209 05:54:12

Re: JMC and IMC (or SMC) takers?!karategirl, I did several past papers from the aforementioned contests, but I never did one proctored. Straining my memory, I think you might have to prepare a bit outside of the standard curricula. I recall it having a few discrete maths problems as well, which I don't think is covered in the UK curricula. Apart from that, the best thing to do is solve hard problems, preferably from those past papers. I have discovered a truly marvellous signature, which this margin is too narrow to contain. Fermat Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world. Archimedes Young man, in mathematics you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
