I had a shorter answer that used "agua", which appears in the Merriam-Webster and Wordnet 3.0 (and some other online dictionaries that quote Wordnet 3.0 as their source), but it's not in the Oxford English Dictionary nor any Scrabble dictionaries, and so I didn't use it in my answer.

I guess you're referring to the immediate neighbours of the middle word, but we could also extend that thought to the use of duplicate words anywhere in the whole solution.

There's no rule governing either case, but it would certainly increase the difficulty level (for both the puzzle setter and the solver) if we brought in some sort of 'duplicate words' rule. That would make the game more interesting, I think.
