How an Wine be poured?

Mr Apple, and Mr Jack have an 8 gallon container full of wine.
They also have two empty containers whose capacities are
5 gallons and 3 gallons respectively.
How can the wine be poured using all three containers so that
Mr Apple and Mr Jack each have 4 gallons  of wine?

Re: How an Wine be poured?

8 goes to 5 until full. 5 goes to 3 until full

Then you have 3, 2 and 3

Then ...

Re: How an Wine be poured?

This is my working out:

8 Gallons.

8 - 5 = 3
5 - 3 = 2

8) = 3
5) = 2
3) = 3

3 + 3 = 6

8) = 6
3) = 0

2 + 0 = 2

5) = 0
3) = 2

0 + 5 = 5

8) 1
5) 5
3) 2

1 + 2 = 3

5) 4
3) 3
8) 1

3) + 8) = 4

8) 4
5) 4
3) 0

Basically, it means...

From the 8G put 5 into the 5G. Put 3 into 3G from 5G. So, you have 3,2,3. Now, take 3G and put it into 8G to make it 6 and 2. Move the 2 into the 3G and then put 5 into the 5G to make it; 1,5,2.  So, with a few easy moves, put 1 from 5G to 3G, move 3G to 8G and Voila!

I'm so great.

Note: This took me 5 minutes at 01:15 at night. big_smile

Re: How an Wine be poured?

Ha! Well, I did it in three microseconds flat when I was flying to Australia to migrate and I was asleep and I was eating and I was happy and was I tired and I still did it!

Beat that!

Re: How an Wine be poured?

In this day and age, picoseconds are ten microseconds.

No! Picoseconds are the fastest measure of speed.

Umm, we were looking at small numbers, if you even bothered to look at the last post.
