Re: Statistics

Easy. Just a warmup really.

Two players play 100 games of pool. The first player wins 57 games and the second wins the rest. The second player declares he is just as good as the first despite the result which he claims was luck. How likely is the second players claim.

Please show some work and get the right answer.

Wouldn't it be 0?

Re: Statistics

Ah, yes.

Well, I already got an answer, didn't I? But you clained it is incorrect.

Yes, that answer was not correct. Are you out of ideas?

Re: Statistics

Because saying that the probability is 0 is like saying that it can not happen. In this case you are saying the probability of a 57 - 43 empirical experiment with a coin, biased or fair is impossible. We both know that is not correct.

Re: Statistics

That is not what probability 0 is.

It means that if we get the 57 - 43, the probability that the coin is fair is 0.

Don't you know the probability that a random variable with a continuous distribution has a certain value is 0? We can only say, for example, what the probability is for the coins probability to be between 7/16 and 9/16.

Re: Statistics

What is implied is 57 or greater. We are talking about a range of values. Also there is a probability connected with 57 - 43 for any coin. Remember this is a discrete distribution, not a continuous one.

Re: Statistics

We would be thinking about that if wanted P(h=53,t=47|p=1/2). Here the coin probability is the random variable and it is one with a continuous distribution over the range [0,1].

If I explain why that is not the answer I will be giving the solution away.
