So, he was writing the date, but not on an assignment or school work. Something else, very important. I will give you one clue though... the thing he was writing on is mentioned somewhere in this post. You may need to have a careful check.

Ha. I was going to write cheque, which is how I normally spell it, but I thought that might give it away. So, well done!
