Re: money

I am not convinced. Say you have a billion dollars, but you are stranded on a desert island. Would you be happy then?

If boats came to rescue me and took me back to a normal place, I'd sure be happy.

Re: money

Money isn't everything. The richest man in Australia (Kerry Packer) got kidney problems and died in his sixtys! And most rich people buy heeps of drugs and get spoilt, only to find that their money was waisted and them broke. But if I were rich most of my money would go to charaties.

Re: money

Heh, I don't think Bill Gates takes drugs (although i'm willing to bet Steve Ballmer does). Anyway, being rich shouldn't be your 'goal'. Money should just be there to help a little with reaching your 'goal'. So yeah, of course I'd be happy if I were rich, but it isn't everything either.

Re: money

Money can be seen in different ways. In the eye of the beholder, it can do good and bad things.

I personally would rather know a million math things than have a million dollars.

Re: money

Hmmmm, a million math things. Do they have to be correct?

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.

Darn! That is going to make it much tougher.

Re: money

Yes, that's what makes it so valuable and desirable (more than money).

Re: money

Just a million things?  That's not so hard.  I can do it in one line:

QED.  smile

Re: money

If you had written out the equation for each of the million numbers, it might have been counted as a million maths things. But, like this, it's just one! smile

I like this one:

That is a millionth degree polynomial and I know all million roots. Each root is a fact.

So you are arguing that 1000000 facts only exist if you  say each one separately?

But isn't this one of the things that mathematical notation is used for?

eg.  Multiplication of numbers is commutative:

You want me to write out all the values for a and b individually??? smile

Re: money

I do not want you to write them. But if you want them to be separate facts, you would need to write them out separately.

Of course, first we need to agree on the definition of a fact, since it seems that's causing the problem.

Yes, but how much is enough? Is too much enough? But if it is too much then how can it be enough?

Re: money

A double of your monthly fees (food, water, electricity,...) is enough for one month.

Double? And then double that again the next month? Sounds like a math riddle...

Re: money

Well, each month your fees are about the same, so each month nearly the same amount of money is needed.
