Re: tau=2*piI think it would devastate people who have already memorized thousands of pi's digits... On the other hand, mayve those people deserve such devastation... The limit operator is just an excuse for doing something you know you can't. “It's the subject that nobody knows anything about that we can all talk about!” ― Richard Feynman “A secret's worth depends on the people from whom it must be kept.” ― Carlos Ruiz Zafón #3 2012-12-17 09:58:03
Re: tau=2*piHi; In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Probability is the most important concept in modern science, especially as nobody has the slightest notion what it means. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. #4 2012-12-19 12:00:55
Re: tau=2*pi
thats so annoying because pi was made, like THOUSANDS OF YEARRRRRRRRSSSS AGO!This idea is 0 YEARS OLD! bbcode;.Uhhhhhhhhh im bored. "Those who feed spambots are spambot conspiarators, and bad people." mathgogocart. #5 2012-12-19 12:29:18
Re: tau=2*piThere's no reason to get so upset... The limit operator is just an excuse for doing something you know you can't. “It's the subject that nobody knows anything about that we can all talk about!” ― Richard Feynman “A secret's worth depends on the people from whom it must be kept.” ― Carlos Ruiz Zafón #6 2012-12-19 12:41:32
Re: tau=2*piThe guys who have memorized thousands of digits can now learn how to multiply thousands of digits. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Re: tau=2*piI memorized this much of Pi: 3.141592653589796264883. I envy that... Chinese guy! - n872yt3r Math Is Fun Rocks! By the power of the exponent, I square and cube you! #8 2013-01-23 09:20:26
Re: tau=2*piWasn't there a guy that bc (before computers) calculated pi out to 700 places by hand. Then ac (after Writing "pretty" math (two dimensional) is easier to read and grasp than LaTex (one dimensional). LaTex is like painting on many strips of paper and then stacking them to see what picture they make. #9 2013-01-23 09:51:34
Re: tau=2*piActually, his score was 527 out of 707 digits correct! That is a great accomplishment! Re: tau=2*piPerhaps tau would have been a better choice, but there are also arguments supporting pi. Area = pi r^2 for example. And some stats formulas have plain old pi in them. Re: tau=2*piI think their strongest argument are the radians. A tau radians is one full turn, half a tau radians is half a turn, and so on... On all other accounts they are either the same or pi is better. The limit operator is just an excuse for doing something you know you can't. “It's the subject that nobody knows anything about that we can all talk about!” ― Richard Feynman “A secret's worth depends on the people from whom it must be kept.” ― Carlos Ruiz Zafón #12 2013-01-23 10:25:50
Re: tau=2*piMaybe we could come up with an argument for pi/2. It is a "right" angle, so it must be right! "The physicists defer only to mathematicians, and the mathematicians defer only to God ..." - Leon M. Lederman #13 2013-01-23 10:40:06
Re: tau=2*piThere would certainly be some arguments for it, but also arguments against it. For now, I don’t think there is any reason for switching from pi... The limit operator is just an excuse for doing something you know you can't. “It's the subject that nobody knows anything about that we can all talk about!” ― Richard Feynman “A secret's worth depends on the people from whom it must be kept.” ― Carlos Ruiz Zafón #14 2013-01-23 12:05:01
