You know how when you go to the user list you see all these novices with 0 posts? Aren't they clogging up the server? Wasn't it annoying when you tried to register with a username, but it was taken by someone with 0 posts? Why not delete not-so-new accounts with 0 posts? That way:

More usernames will be available.

The server will be less clogged and will run faster.

You'll be able to look at the user list and find the users you know without searching.

Is it possible to program that?

I'll be here at least once every decade.

Yes, good idea, but would also need to be careful not to delete someone who visits sometimes but has never posted.

If they visit but do not post, they dont need to register as a member and so their username can be deleted anyway. Use common sense.

Hi;

One administrator told me that there is such a thing as bragging rights for the most members. Maths is that true or was he just playing with me? Is there any advantage at all?

well... on some free forum X, even if i don't post, i'd register myself so that i can easily point out the **new posts** from the **old already visited** ones every time i log in!

that's like ordering Chicken and getting Free Beer to go with!!

it's using the Free Service!!!!

Yes.

I remember people posting messages like "I have been a regular here for a while, and this is my first post ..."

What if we just deleted people like that?

Does the server need to be faster?

let us say that the server has three (or more) Lookup Tables

1. Users visiting several times Daily.

2. Users visiting <15 times a week.

3. Users visiting <30 times a Month.

this way, the Queries can be Served quite fast for the Members visiting Frequently and the Less Frequent users won't effect the performance!!

there can be other methods to reduce load....

What if we just deleted people like that?

Then they can just re-register, cant they?

Hi MathsisFun;

How about even deleting active members? You could provide a delete button, like this:

* Report |

* Delete |

* Edit |

* Quote |

* Make Question|

* Delete Member|

Yeah! Delete ALL members ... but will it be faster if there is no one there?

By the way, the table lookups are really fast. The speed is more to do with actually transmitting the data to you.

Ahhh,I have always been wondering about this.

What if the criteria was:

1)Low post count (below 5)

2)Low visit count (less than once in two months)

I know I might not be an administrator or anything, but I more agree with mathisfun on this (just as a third party opinion I guess). Everytime you delete a member for "inactivity" it discourages and/or frustrates those who actually do plan on doing something eventually, on top of that, it can lead other potential people who are interested in something like this forum away. I myself was inactive for, I'm pretty sure for over 6 months, and I think I had less then 5 posts. Now if I came back and found out my account was deleted, I as a normal member would be pretty annoyed. I don't know if I really made my point that clear, and possibly said more arguable things, but I am only trying to say overall when websites, forums, etc. do things like that, they in turn lose potential members, and was ... at least trying to explain reasons for this, hope I didn't do that bad of a job...

I currently favor deleting all accounts that are inactive for more than a millisecond.

So, basically, you would like to delete all members on the forum..

Of course not! Just the ones who are can not post 1000 posts a second.

And since nobody can do that, the whole membership of the forumm would be deleted, including you and MIF!

Oh yes me too! MIF can not be deleted. Just imagine, when we signed up again and got to introduce ourselves all over again.

It would be something like rebooting the whole forum.

But, what would you do with the old threads?

I mean, would they stay on the forum after the "rebooting"?

I certainly would not. I mean I have put up with alot of bobbym's antics but that I would not tolerate.
