Any recommendations?I am going to appear at this olympiad: 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #2 20120913 23:47:53
Re: Any recommendations?Hi Agnishom;
You are old enough for more. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #3 20120914 00:31:56
Re: Any recommendations?Any good book that I can read? 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #4 20120914 00:40:44
Re: Any recommendations?You were asking about integer partitions on another forum. Do you know anything about generating functions? In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #5 20120914 00:48:13
Re: Any recommendations?
I am not sure which website you are talking about
I am confused about that. I can only understand the recursive solution 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #6 20120914 00:57:24
Re: Any recommendations?Remember, Project Euler?
First thing I would suggest is the same thing I do when conversing with anonimnystefy, I urge you to abandon the theoretical portion of math that they cram down your throat in school in favor of concrete problems. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #7 20120914 01:03:29
Re: Any recommendations?Yes, Project Euler!
Why? 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #8 20120914 01:06:48

Re: Any recommendations?I understand now
Therefore, you do not believe in chain reactions? 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #10 20120914 01:44:58
Re: Any recommendations?
I believe in seeds. A small seed can grow into a large tree. Poison on the other hand does not promote growth. It just kills you. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #11 20120914 12:40:45

Re: Any recommendations?When you have to do a tough combinatorics problem then they can be cumbersome. They rely on casework to get the answer which is really like counting which is what you are trying to avoid in combinatorics to begin with.
This is the one: In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #13 20120915 00:13:15

Re: Any recommendations?Hi Agnishom;
It may soon have one. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #15 20120916 00:19:15
Re: Any recommendations?Please explain this one; I am not aware of the big Pi notation 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #16 20120916 00:21:01
Re: Any recommendations?That means a product instead of a series. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #17 20120916 00:25:53
Re: Any recommendations?The series is infinite!! But p(n) should be finite 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #18 20120916 00:28:02
Re: Any recommendations?That is a recurrence relation. If you want p(8) you you do not use anything past 8. In this case you would stop at p(7). In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #19 20120916 00:28:52
Re: Any recommendations?Where is the number above the Sigma?? 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' Re: Any recommendations?Sometimes, they mean it goes to infinity and they leave it out. Sometimes it goes to n and they leave it out. It really depends on the context. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #21 20120916 00:37:53
Re: Any recommendations?So this is recursion; So would I get the error? Code:Maximum Recursion Depth reached 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. Alokananda #22 20120916 00:40:02
Re: Any recommendations?That is not exactly the same thing. In some languages that happens when you define a variable in terms of itself. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #23 20120916 00:45:36
Re: Any recommendations?
But why p(n7)?? 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #24 20120916 00:48:22
