Re: Can we reach for the stars?

Thanks, John! I am still working on the Grade 2.

I just found a reference that says things like "you shouldn't do that subsitiution at the beginning of a word" and "you shouldn't cross over a suffix and the root word" - I am re-programming to include some of those rules, but some will simply need a human translator (I will have to put a disclaimer on the page!)

Re: Can we reach for the stars?

What does "cross over" mean?
Also, I made a worksheet with the word flashlight in the title, and I was logged in, but it's gone.  Can't find it.  Oh well I have it stored at home if you can't find it.
Also, there still exists two Tricky Subtraction worksheets, and one has a simple question and a long answer, which I'd like to keep, but the other one has a really long question section, and a shorter answer.  This one could be deleted.
...
Oh I think I know what you mean about crossing over root and suffix, sort of like if the word was ripeness, you wouldn't want to use the "en", use "ness" instead.   Yeah, that could get tricky to program, add in priorities if possible.

Re: Can we reach for the stars?

This is the flashlight one here. It's a really good idea. (But is is by "Guest" - why not John E Franklin? It should be able to keep you logged in .... is my program not working?)

I don't think I can do all the suffix/prefix stuff ... I would need a huge dictionary for that. Hopefully it is more a matter of style, and won't affect the understanding.

Re: Can we reach for the stars?

Maybe the problem of my being logged in making a worksheet is that I am using the Opera Browser.
It is also incompatible with my ability to write emails at rock.com
Next time I make a worksheet, I'll use Internet Explorer instead.

Or you could try Firefox 1.5

Re: Can we reach for the stars?

I have made some more progress on the Braille Translator - you can now save images as ".jpg"s, and it also handles all 189 Grade 2 contractions, though with a minor error rate beyond my control. It is about 98% right.

However I have one report back that it doesn't work properly on one person's PC - I am trying to narrow down what and why.

If you enter "and for of the with" and use Grade 2, they should all come out as single-character contractions (they do on my test PCs) ... what result do you guys get?

Re: Can we reach for the stars?

I get this:

.  .. ..    .. .  .     .. .      .  . ..
    .  .    .   . ..     .  .    .. .   .
   .           .  .      .        .     .

a-n-d    f-o-r     th-e    wi-th

The dash separates the characters.

Re: Can we reach for the stars?

I'm not getting the one character codes for those common words like
for, which is all 6 dots I think.  I am getting like mathsyperson.
Are we running an older version of the code?  It says 98% accuracy.
Can you add a version # if that could be it?

Re: Can we reach for the stars?

OK, thanks. I will put a version number, and make a few more mods, and get back to you.

Thanks smile

Re: Can we reach for the stars?

Hmm. When I translate, it seems to show something different. This is what mine looks like:

Re: Can we reach for the stars?

Found it! It is different in Flash Player 8 (I was testing it on version 7)

(Right click on the translator and it should say "About Flash Player 8" - yes?)

I have had to do a real "kludgy" work around till I think of something better.

Re: Can we reach for the stars?

The first picture attached shows 'Enter your text here' being translated, and the second picture, the same text translated but with the letters showing underneath.

When I load the page, the default text is there. I click 'Grade 2', and the default text is translated, but it doesn't have the caps character at the start. Then when I click the button to show the letters underneath, the caps character appears. (Compare pictures.) It's not a problem, but I'm just wondering why.

What does 'd5' (in the second picture) mean? I've seen lots of other characters like that too.

Also, 'and for of the with' are all coming up as single characters now.

Re: Can we reach for the stars?

justforthemoment,  d5 means a dot a position # 5.
The six positions are numbered:
1 4
2 5
3 6
Also, the word "here" is apparently the "h" preceded by
the 5 dot or d5.
One I recall from studying is "mother" and "work", which are
d5  m and d5 w, respectively.
If no d5 is before a w by itself, it might be "will".
I should review them all.
This is really terrific what Rod has created!
I am very happy about it!!

Re: Can we reach for the stars?

Update: The Braille translator version 1.40 is now live ( http://www.mathsisfun.com/braille-translation.html )

It can now create "ASCII" text ... which can be cut-and-pasted into a word processor, and if you choose a Braille font (available here for example: http://www.gh-mathspeak.com/downloads.php ) you get lovely Braille which you can format to your hearts content.

Also has a print function.

Test it and let me know!
