Re: need help!!!

Caroline drove 50 miles to her mother's house at an average speed of 40 miles per hour, and she drove back on the same route at an average speed of 60 miles per hour. What was her average speed for the entire trip, in miles per hour?

Re: need help!!!

There: 50 mi at 40 mi/h = 1.25h,
Back Again: 50 mi at 60 mi/h = 0.8333... h,
There and Back: 100 mi, taking 1.25h + 0.8333... h = 2.08333... h
Speed: 100 / 2.08333 ... = 48 mph   DONE

By the use of my trusty calculator.

Who thought it should be the average of 40 and 60 = 50 mph ??

Re: need help!!!

I thought that I wouldn't answer the question.

I mean, Yea.. I thought it was going to be 48. Of course.

Re: need help!!!

I was just browsing for interesting posts in the past and I noticed that this one was never really answered.  The question asked how far the boy had walked.

let v be the velocity of the boy

    D/v = t1

    D/(4v/3) = 3D/4v = t2

    delta t = t1 - t2

    we know that delta t = 4/3 and it also equals D/v - 3D/4v

     4/3 = D/v - 3D/4v

     4/3 = D/4v

     D = 16v/3 = 48km
