Anytime something depends on how many of the other. Basically it is for this type of problem. I do not remember whether Conroy does one but I know that Tucker showed me how. This is the standard book problem.
I have 2 die. I throw one and then throw the other as many times as the number that comes up on the first die.What are the probabilities for each possible sum?

I am not trying to get on your nerves. These threads demand a little bit more accuracy. We get that accuracy by correcting each other. I realize that is hard to do without offending someone. Would you leave an answer as 2 / 4 or 32 / 64 or 50 / 100? For one thing you might confuse the person who is marking your paper. 2630 / 104 does not immediately look like 1315 / 52.
I never say in an answer not to simplify except in some rare cases. We can talk about them if you like. Sometimes when working on a problem it is advantageous to not simplify until the end. Those cases are rare.
