Re: The Professor and the Student
Oops, Wednesday is starting to look decidedly dicey... It's the activity of the intelligence above all that gives charm to existence. #27 2012-03-23 11:07:02
Re: The Professor and the StudentI think I know what's wrong . Everything is in the favor of the students. If he doesn't give it on Monday then they can expect it on Tuesday . If he doesn't give it on Tuesday then they can expect it on Wednesday. If he doesn't give it on Wednesday then they can expect it on Thursday. If he doesn't give it on Thursday then they can expect it on Friday . The limit operator is just an excuse for doing something you know you can't. “It's the subject that nobody knows anything about that we can all talk about!” ― Richard Feynman “A secret's worth depends on the people from whom it must be kept.” ― Carlos Ruiz Zafón #28 2012-03-23 11:10:36
Re: The Professor and the StudentNot exactly. Since the last day is out so is the one before it. The professor is not stupid he is never going to pick Friday. He also is never going to pick Thursday. He also is never going to pick Wednesday. The difference in how the day of the test is picked. Randomly or through strategical thought. One is a logic problem the other a game theory problem. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Probability is the most important concept in modern science, especially as nobody has the slightest notion what it means. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. #29 2012-03-23 11:18:17
Re: The Professor and the StudentStill they can expect it whenever he gives it. The limit operator is just an excuse for doing something you know you can't. “It's the subject that nobody knows anything about that we can all talk about!” ― Richard Feynman “A secret's worth depends on the people from whom it must be kept.” ― Carlos Ruiz Zafón #30 2012-03-23 11:23:45
Re: The Professor and the StudentExpecting does not count. What gurthbruins is saying is that it is not possible for the professor to choose a day. There is an argument that the students will always be sure of the day of the test. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Probability is the most important concept in modern science, especially as nobody has the slightest notion what it means. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. #31 2012-03-23 11:28:49
Re: The Professor and the StudentWednesday dead and buried already - I didn't think we were going to get so far so soon ... It's the activity of the intelligence above all that gives charm to existence. #32 2012-03-23 11:50:51

Re: The Professor and the StudentInteresting, but by my reckoning I make the score about 5 - 5, and I myself am voting for both sides. (so far) Last edited by gurthbruins (2012-03-23 18:57:21) It's the activity of the intelligence above all that gives charm to existence. #35 2012-03-23 21:08:23

but you seem to be assuming that democracy applies in mathematics. Thanks phrontister, Bob You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself..........Galileo Galilei #37 2012-03-24 06:25:07

Re: The Professor and the StudentYou're both wrong.I was the one who was supposed to post that question in another thread.Sorry about this. Re: The Professor and the StudentSo do it. That way each can re-post and then delete the wrong post version. That's equivalent to moving part of a thread only. You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself..........Galileo Galilei #49 2012-03-24 09:41:40
