That is the one I saw in the Berndt book. It is one of Ramanujans notebooks. I did not understand it so I could not use it. I will ask you more questions about it tomorrow.

Thanks. But I don't even know what the question is. After 37 years of trying to work out what certain pupils were trying to say, I can usually see through the fog and get to the meat. (Apologies for the mixed metaphore). But this one has got me beat.

I'm not sure he is changing the question; just re-phrasing it; that's how confused I've got.

Anyway, any thoughts, however bizarre, greatfully received.

I have found the toughest questioners are programmers. They are taught to think in code. That means they work by arbitrarily changing code as they go along. They try this and then they try that. Nothing wrong with that but math types will find that somewhat dizzying.

That is a nice one and I figured out this afternoon why my method got the wrong answer.

I have the notebooks but have only gone through the first one. Also the Berndt book on continued fractions and the Chrystal book on Algebra do not do the problem. Where did you find the solution?

I think I did a sign mistake inside the summations, I'll rectify it.

I too read the notebook.

The question in there wanted to prove

I couldn't understand how the sum was manipulated there, so tried to do it myself.
