Re: simulate the problem

it would be row #4 and #15 only, right?

Re: simulate the problem

So that means 2 is the answer to how many you guessed right.

Probability can be defined as:

How many successes did you have?

Re: simulate the problem

We wanted to know how many you would get right if you guessed that is the number of successes.

Re: simulate the problem

Yes, and what is the total number of trials you had?

Re: simulate the problem

That is correct!

If this is the formula for the probability that we woud get 2 right out of 3 questions that are multiple choice, what do you put where?

Re: simulate the problem

um the 2 on total of successes and 20 on the total number of trials? hmm

Re: simulate the problem

So you get:

So according to your simulation of 20 trials you got 2 right and the probability is 1 / 10.

Congratulations you have run your first simulation by hand. This is exactly how I would do it with a computer. Only thing a computer is much faster. I would not have run 20 trials but rather 100 000 000 trials.

Re: simulate the problem

yay smile

sooo if i leave it with only 20 trials its still correct?

Re: simulate the problem

Nope! It is only an approximation. But you have 20 trials. The more trials the closer you will get to the exact answer which is 2 / 9.

The simulation I showed is just for illustration. It is far too small to be very accurate. But it is all that is possible by hand. The point is, it illustrates the principles of a simulation.

If your teacher knows anything about computers and/or math he/she will know you are right. Just copy the table and the results in your answer.

What to do if you are marked wrong? Then please send your teacher to this forum and I will argue for you.

Re: simulate the problem

so the correct answer is 2 / 9?

okay awesome! I bet my teacher will love that haha

Re: simulate the problem

Yes, the correct analytical answer is 2 / 9. That was done by using the binomial distribution, in other words mathematics.

The simulation is not bad for only 20 trials. In real work you may not have an exact answer so you would trust the simulation's answer and use it.
