Mod Eight trickHere's a trick for modular 8 computation. Imagine for a moment that even an earthworm may possess a love of self and a love of others. #2 2010-12-14 05:42:42
Re: Mod Eight trickHi John;
Instead of going 6 * 8 you can use 6 * 0 and anywhere else you see an 8 substitute a 0. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. I am willing to wager that over 75% of the new words that appeared were nothing more than spelling errors that caught on. #3 2010-12-14 05:59:27
Re: Mod Eight trickYes, yes, you are right, I was just thinking about that on the couch... Imagine for a moment that even an earthworm may possess a love of self and a love of others. #4 2010-12-14 06:12:29
Re: Mod Eight trickWithout getting into why this works because of that to get mod 5 of any number. You just have to take the mod of the last digit. In mathematics, you don't understand things. Re: Mod Eight trick
Not necessary, since 1000 is divisible by 8. For any number with four or more digits, you only need to concentrate on the first three digits on the right. Thus 6532 (mod 8) = 532 (mod 8) and 123456789 (mod 8) = 789 (mod 8). Last edited by JaneFairfax (2010-12-14 06:51:20) #6 2010-12-14 07:25:29

Re: Mod Eight trickWow, thanks Jane, that's incredible. 100a + 10b - 4a - 2b is then divisible by 8, hence cancels!!! Imagine for a moment that even an earthworm may possess a love of self and a love of others. #8 2010-12-15 03:07:07
