In French, there are also three words to describe numbers numéro, nombre, chiffre but they are used differently from English.
Numéro is a number like a telephone number, house number, or number of an artistic work (e.g. symphony number 2 in C minor symphonie numéro 2 en ut mineur). Its a number that serves as a label or marker.
Nombre is number as a mathematical entity (e.g. real number nombre réel). Its a number on which you can perform mathematical operations.
Chiffre corresponds to what we mean by digit. For example, the French equivalent of the British game show Countdown is Des chiffres et des lettres Numbers and letters. French does not have any equivalent word for what English calls numeral instead, since a numeral consists of digits, the plural chiffres is used to refer to a numeral.

I think "Numéro" would therefore be called a "Nominal number". Maybe I need a page on that, too ...
