need help (ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION)

i cannot understand this

IF x +1/x=9 and x(rise to 2)+1/x(raise to 2), find the value of x-1/x   using special idendities of algebraic expression

<--what about this? Should be EQUALITY, not expression.

sorry
x(raise to 2)+1/x(raise to 2)=53

sorry for the inconvinience

Re: need help (ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION)

i think its more like this

x²+(1/x)²

his  ²  looks like its only on 1 not on the whole 1/x

anyways...

x²+(1/x)² = 9²

Re: need help (ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION)

ok to suha since we seem to be having problems identifying what your saying.

which of these two is the correct translation of your expression

Re: need help (ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION)

Basmah, your last step is wrong.

Presumably, you've gone from x + 1/x = 9 and squared both sides to get x² + 1/x² = 9².

If you're squaring something with more than one term, then you can't just square each term individually. You need to multiply each term by each other term.

So (x + 1/x)² = x*x + x*1/x + 1/x*x + 1/x*1/x = x² + 2 + 1/x²

Why did the vector cross the road?
It wanted to be normal.

The other should be:

See that the fractal line is a little bit longer?
But in future i'll use brackets.

Re: need help (ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION)

Using the x^2+1/x^2 =53   ,get  (x-1/x)^2=x^2+1/x^2 -2=53-2=51
then x-1/x =51^1/2

Using the x+1/x=9  , get  77

omg ....lol

Re: need help (ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION)

LaTeX is so useful, I think it would benefit everyone a lot if it was used a little more... and it's easy too.

But yes, good job, I think that would have been confusing enough with LaTeX.

Re: need help (ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION)

Recommend you to use Latex to express your problem, otherwise no one understands you.

Here is a simple expression made by Latex:

To show the above, you have to type in the code below:

X'(y-Xβ)=0

Re: need help (ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION)

No, no!
This system is cracked up!
It doesn't have solutions, so we can't find x-1/x:
Squaring the first equation:

,
but, clearly,
,
so we have no solutions.
That means that using different approaches for finding x-1/x yields to different answers.

Re: need help (ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION)

I told you - the question is wrong. There doesn't exist any x satisfiyng the conditions.
