Emoticons - Smilie Expressions

Greetings, all! I would like to provide one suggestions to the Math Is Fun forum. It might just be a little opinion of mine, though I would really like to express it out to the whole forum.

This suggestion, as the title tells, is a suggestion for posting and replying to threads. Whenever you want to post up a messege, you might want to add some expressions to your posts, so they can become more lively. If the forum has this function already, I would like to suggest that a list of the smilies/emoticons put in a list next to the messege box, so the members could just conveniently click on the emoticons in the box to get the smilie on the messege box.

I don't know if people would like to have this function, though I think it would be better to see some live smilies on the forum, than just seeing words.

If this suggestion has been suggested before, please forgive me for repeating it. If you agree to this suggestion or not, please still send your opinions by giving a reply to this thread. Thank you very much. I really appreciate it.

Have a nice day!

Re: Emoticons - Smilie Expressions

I disagree. I personally would rather type two characters to get a smily than mess with the mouse.

Re: Emoticons - Smilie Expressions

I know what you are talking about - there is a "mod" available for the forum that has that. Maybe we could get votes.

I have also thought that we could have a few more smileys. The advantage is one of communication - with the right smiley you can avoid misunderstanding. ( "You Fool!" vs "You Fool smile !" )

Does anyone have suggestions for smileys?

Re: Emoticons - Smilie Expressions

I don't have any smilies in my pouch right now, and I couldn't possibly "steal" smilies from other boards and forums. Anyway, the other board I got to post at has smilies that aren't 3D, but they are really emotional (they move).

I do agree that we should have more smilies than the list we have now. It would provide a wider choice of selections of emoticons for people to use, so they don't need to always use the same old ones all the time and express more.

Re: Emoticons - Smilie Expressions

On another forum I post at, some people use smilies from This page.

The people there are obviously willing to let people use smilies on different forums, so it wouldn't be unethical or anything. Some of them might not be appropriate for here though.

What do people think about these?

Re: Emoticons - Smilie Expressions

They aren't bad.

I wasn't implying we would steal other people's smileys - they are giving them away! Google has a directory of them here

Have a look at these, and let us know which you like: here and here (Caution: Popups), here (and a copy  here) ...

Re: Emoticons - Smilie Expressions

Those look quite acceptable to me. Not bad, not bad. Some of them might be able to match this forums' appetite.

By the way, I got some which are still [img] files and could probably work on this forums. A list of the emoticons could be seen here.

It should be okay to use them. smile

Well, I think people like to type it more than clicking it. But it doesn't matter, jU, really.

Re: Emoticons - Smilie Expressions

You can have both.

You can type the letters, or use the "click me to type for you"

So, for an experiment I have enhanced the "Post a Reply" and "Edit Post" with some simple formatting, the standard smileys, and a bunch of other smileys I found.

down  Tell me what you think!  up

If you don't like, I will remove.

I will also remove smileys that people think are annoying or silly.

So, use the new smileys sparingly, as they will get removed if not approved!

Re: Emoticons - Smilie Expressions

They're great, but I've realised, having a menu there makes them extremely accessible, so when [some] people want to use them they go on a clicking frenzy and that's when we get spammy posts.

It's not a very big problem, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

They're cool, but that's no reason to use them in every post.

Re: Emoticons - Smilie Expressions

I think it may be a problem, or maybe people are just excited with a new thing.

Maybe I could place them below or to the right where they are less easy to see ...

Re: Emoticons - Smilie Expressions

Or, if it's not too hard, you could have them in a pop-up window. Or you have to click a 'show smilies' button which makes the menu slide out (far-fetched, I know).

Also, there is a list of smilies and their symbols in the Help page, which might be useful if it is updated with the new ones.
