Applied Trigonometry #2

If the angle of elevation of a cloud from a point h metres above the lake is θ and th angle of depression in the lake is 45 Degree, prove that the height of the cloud is h tan ( θ + 45°) metres.

Re: Applied Trigonometry #2

hi Agnishom,

I'm sure you don't really need my help with this one.  My diagram shows the cloud at C.  B is a point on the ground immediately below C, and C' is the reflection of the cloud in the lake so that BC = BC'.  Also equal to this amount is OA, where O is the observer, h above the ground, where A is on the same level as O, so that AB = h

You want BC (or BC' or OA)

Just make every trig equation you can and it's bound to pop out somewhere along the way.

Oh yes and I've used t for theta because I don't know how to get Greek letters with this software or even if it's possible.

Happy trig-ing smile

Only if it is true. Is it?

Whhhhhaaaattttt!  You mean you might be setting impossible problems?  I hope not.

Anyway, I've just done it ... 5 lines.  Huh!

Re: Applied Trigonometry #2

Thanks, I needed the hint. smile

Its not me. My friends keep firing these impossible problems at me.

Just curious: If this was asked in a school test for 5 marks and your student wrote 5 lines, would you give him full credit?

If the lines were correct, then yes, full credit.
