Re: Rounding .5 up or down?
That depends on the prices. Most prices tend to be biased towards the high end to make people think things are cheaper than they are. eg, £3.99 etc. Why did the vector cross the road? It wanted to be normal. #34 2006-01-05 01:37:52

Re: Rounding .5 up or down?I think people like to round up becuase the most public use of rounding is related to money handling. rounding up = more $$$. Aloha Nui means Goodbye. #37 2006-01-05 20:42:39

Re: Rounding .5 up or down?Consider this: you have a bag of sweets containing 10 whole sweets but lots of shrapnel in the bottom of the bag. The shrapnel could make up 3/4 of a sweet yet you'd still say you have 10 sweets. Then in this case, are you not rounding down even though you have more than .5? I don't think you can "prove" which way to round, people just do it to simplify a number, it's not actually a mathematical theory (or somthing). Aloha Nui means Goodbye. #39 2006-01-06 17:50:01
Re: Rounding .5 up or down?Over a large sampling, though, you could choose a method that would lead to the least bias. "The physicists defer only to mathematicians, and the mathematicians defer only to God ..." - Leon M. Lederman #40 2006-01-07 04:26:18
Re: Rounding .5 up or down?
That's an interesting point. Most of our arguments so far have been theoretical, but in practical situations it is usually obvious which method to use. Why did the vector cross the road? It wanted to be normal. |
