Hmm, I'm honestly a little bit confused about 1...indirect thing.  Is 0/0 really undefined?  I would have honestly thought it equals 0.  I'm a little bit confused on that one part, so anyone care to explain (why 0/0 is undefined)?  Though I do understand why it's not a continuous function.  Other then that, I'd say you explained things clearly enough to be able to understand everything, so I'd say you did a pretty good job.

As for one of the posts, I don't really understand the 2=1 proof.  Everything seems right until you get to a+b=b, nor do I understand how they got to that.  I fail to see how this is proving 2=1, or rather, making it arguable I should say.

Thank you phrontister, I've never been personally able to find it myself (I have looked before, though honestly not especially hard).  Thanks as well Shivamcoder3013.  Just curious, did you mean the first one, second, or both?

Oh, didn't realize you were a new member.  Your question already seems answered, so I just have one thing to say.

Welcome to the forum!

Hi louhawthorne!

Welcome to the forum!

I'm glad you don't drill and would rather enjoy yourself.  Me, I personally have high emphasis (on myself) to understand everything (I'm still having some trouble with calculus, but getting better...).  As for the link you are talking about, looking up on google like you mentioned, are you talking about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qSxWvIcmAI?  Because I'm not sure what you mean by it doesn't work on the forum...

#132 Re: Maths Is Fun - Suggestions and Comments » Calligar's Signature » 2012-11-07 13:55:04

Who said,

Life isn’t a simple Math: there are always other variables.

, because I'm pretty sure that is the exact one I remembered.  As for my signature, I picked that, and another one I really liked (from the first page out of bob bundy's suggestions).  Thank you all, more satisfied about my signature now.

#134 Re: Maths Is Fun - Suggestions and Comments » Calligar's Signature » 2012-11-05 19:13:55

Does anyone know who said something to the degree of there are always other variables, I've heard that one when I was a kid, and it's always stuck with me...

#135 Re: Maths Is Fun - Suggestions and Comments » Quadratic Equations in the Real World » 2012-11-05 19:08:05

Yeah, I don't remember seeing that either the page either, but if it's changed now, that might have been why.  If not, it was probably because I was really tired yesterday.  I had read what you wrote, but I didn't personally notice it...

#136 Re: Maths Is Fun - Suggestions and Comments » Polls » 2012-11-05 19:02:58

Hmm, so it isn't a good suggestion, because there's no way of doing it...easily in the first place?

Well I'm going for tonight, I hope I'll be back soon...  What I really wanted to ask is peoples' suggestions about a good quote I can use.  I more rather looked up quotes and looked through them until I found one I liked, but I'm not really that satisfied with it.  I was interested in changing my signature to a new quote, and I just wanted to ask if anyone had any suggestions on some good math quotes.

I also would like to say, sorry for asking here, but I wasn't really quite sure if asking here or under Help Me! was better.  I figured Help Me! was more for math related questions so decided to ask here, sorry if this was the wrong place to ask.

#138 Re: Maths Is Fun - Suggestions and Comments » Quadratic Equations in the Real World » 2012-11-04 19:33:16

Sorry, I'm actually quite tired, but I kind of forced myself to read through the whole thing.  At first I was confused because for some odd reason, I was thinking the whole thing was talking about matrices (I honestly have no idea why I was thinking that); but after figuring it out, I find this thing quite interesting.  I don't know if I have ever really tried applying quadratic equations to the real world like that, but now I see it done and was like, well, I'm not quite sure how else to put it, interesting.  I'm sure others will find this useful.

While on here, I didn't see any sign of any polls.  So I was going to ask...would it be such a bad idea to have them?  I know they have proven useful to me on another forum I have been on, nice way to vote for things.  If they do exist on this forum, would someone please explain?

Hi logical1!

Welcome to the forum!

So far I like the games here, although, admittedly, I haven't done many.  Hope you enjoy the games in that case!

What happened to my last response, I intentionally hid it, tested it last time and it worked.  How did my button disappear?

Hello ramshorn5002!

Welcome to the forum!

Do you have any favorite puzzles?

#145 Re: Puzzles and Games » Games for kids » 2012-11-04 18:47:35

Hmm...I think I directed you to all the ones on this site, um...as for other sites...I'm sorry to say I'm not familiar with many other sites.  When I search on google, I get results like...

http://www.learninggamesforkids.com/logic_games.html
http://www.kidsmathgamesonline.com/logic.html
http://www.thekidzpage.com/learninggames/logic_games/index.html

Looking through those ones, they seem to have what you are looking for.  However, as I already said, I am not personally familiar with any of these, therefore can not say for sure if these sites are as good as they appear (I have browsed through them and they seem okay).

#146 Re: Maths Is Fun - Suggestions and Comments » Which Video? » 2012-10-28 12:02:32

Thanks, I think I got it now.  Also, this answer might be a little late, but I guess better now then never...

I personally like video v the best.  After watching all of them, here are my thoughts...

Video V seemed to be the most interesting and able to keep my attention out of the 3.  It seemed to clearly explain everything, and I didn't seem to have any issues with it.

Video E, well, trying to put into words, it seemed a little more...open.  There were differences in the way things were done that almost be done like one thing after the next, instead of more naturally talking about it.  I'm not sure if I'm quite getting this across well, but it also seemed a little more, demanding rather then feeling like I was really going to learn from it.  I really don't think I did a good job at explaining my reasons behind this, but I tried...

Video S was the only one I had trouble paying attention too.  There could have been other reasons for that, but I was trying to pay close attention to all 3, and this one in particularly didn't seem to grasp my attention the best.  That's really the only reason I have for this one.

All the videos in my opinion were well done, with the 2 on top for me being Video V and Video E, it was only really small differences that led me to like Video V the best out of them all (which I tried to explain, but don't think I did the best job at).  Any of the videos that are chosen I think would overall be pretty good for teaching people, but in my own opinion, I think Video V gets everything across the best.

#147 Re: This is Cool » Infinity multiplied by infinity » 2012-10-28 11:44:12

Hmm, the issue is, I don't think it's impossible to...officially take it out.  There will always be those who use it, and it would likely be remembered throughout history, maybe even added again, but that doesn't mean it can't be officially taken out either.  It is why I argue for its case; I definitely see potential in it if it doesn't already have anything that's really necessary.  But arguably to that point, I'm sure you could argue quite a lot more isn't absolutely necessary, yet without it, math would in turn be much harder.  Infinity is a good idea.  It may provide confusion, especially with all the branches of math using it, some in arguably contradictory ways, but without it, I feel it would do more damage then not.

#148 Re: Maths Is Fun - Suggestions and Comments » Spell Check » 2012-10-26 18:04:15

I use firefox as well, and everything seems to work fine for me.  It could have to do with other things on your computer (bug, glitch, software installed unnoticeable incorrect, malware, slight incompatibility, hardware issue like your hard drive, etc.).  I see one of 2 options that might help, either reinstalling the browser, or testing to see if it works with another one (I would probably test another one first).  However, it isn't that big of an issue, and there might be no way to fix it without doing something more drastic and/or very involved.  If either of those 2 options don't work, I'd have to think if there is anything...simple that can be done.  Oh wait, perhaps check you settings to see if you changed anything (sorry for noting at the last minute)?

On the other hand, I thought I remember you mentioning somewhere that this issue has already been fixed...but I can't seem to find where you mentioned it.

Um...bobbym or anyone, I would like to post my answer, but so it doesn't affect others decisions, I'd like to put it in the post where you have to click the button to see it, and I'm not sure how to do that...

#150 Re: This is Cool » 0.9999....(recurring) = 1? » 2012-10-26 17:14:04

To be fair, the proofs they offer can be argued from a logical standpoint (so long as you understand everything that is going on), but there is nothing in mathematics that can prove how they are different otherwise.  I myself do not...personally believe this as a mathematical "fact," but also realize how futile it is to argue against it.  So like those many, it is impossible to convince me as well, after all, there is a reason this idea is so highly controversial.
