Aaron reads 3 times faster than Patrick and Shad reads 4 times faster than Aaron. If Patrick reads 4 pages in 1 hour, how many pages reads each of his two comrades? I know how to resolve the problem, but I just wanna be sure I resolved it in the right way.

X: Number of pages Patrick read

3X: Number of pages Aaron read. (3 times faster than the number of pages Shad read.)

12X: Number of pages Shad read. (12 times faster than the numbers of pages Shad read.)

Now, I resolve : 12X=4 (pages read by Patrick)

                              X=1/3

And the rest resolves itself. Basically, it doesn't say it explicitely but am I right saying that X is the number of pages read by Shad, right ?

Ok, I didn't make the link with the LCM, so it's really for economical reason.

Could you just explain that part and the rest, not sure if i understood correctly

Hi, just a simple question here : Let's say I have two composite numbers factorized in to prime numbers.

12= 2.2.3

20= 2.2.5

And the question is : If I want a number to be divisible by both 12 and 20, I will re arrange the prime numbers.

So,

60=2.2.3.5

Which I think works perfectly, but it bothers me to know that we aren't using the two other 2's.

So,

240=2.2.2.2.3.5

Why isn't that done ? Am I too complicating things for nothing ? (It's just I would want to understand why ^^)

Thanks for your answer

Ok, thanks for the fast answer ! And do you have any idea why the answer would be 18/72 (which before was 54/72) and not 6/24 ? Why multiply it by 3 ? Logicaly, the order of the items shouldn't change anything ... ???

Hi, please, tell me if my was of solving this problem is good or not : Users of public transport are waiting for the bus: 3 women and 1 man. One of them wears glasses, another gloves, and another a hat. What is the probability that the man has none of these accessories?

Here how :

1:Woman
2:Woman
3:Woman
4:Man
                                               Glasses, Gloves, Hat, Nothing

All possible combinations :

{1,2,3,4} {1,2,4,3} {1,3,2,4} {1,3,4,2} {1,4,2,3} {1,4,3,2} {2,1,3,4} {2,1,4,3} {2,3,1,4} {2,3,4,1} {2,4,1,3} {2,4,3,1} {3,1,2,4} {3,1,4,2} {3,2,1,4} {3,2,4,1} {3,4,1,2} {3,4,2,1} {4,1,2,3} {4,1,3,2} {4,2,1,3} {4,2,3,1} {4,3,1,2} {4,3,2,1}

Probability of the man having nothing : 6/24 or 0,25

___________________________________________________

Now here's what the ''real'' answer is : 54/72 or 0,75

I figured that they could have obtained this answer by multiplying 18/24 X3 = 54/72 (In my opinion, this is an error because the question is what is the probability that the man has NONE of these accesories and 18/24 is the probability that he wears one of these objects! Am I correct?) So the ''real'' answer would be 18/72

And last thing that bugs me, if I'm correct in all my previous statements, why is the answer on 72 ? There is 24 possibilities ! Why multiply by 3 ? Does the order of the object change anything ? (WHich isn't logical, if you ask me)

Thank you

Ok thanks everyone. Just another question, when people say understand things intuitively, what do they exactly mean ? If I can give an example, sometimes, when I learn something, I understand in it's general aspect (Intuitively?) but I can't explain it in words, I just ''understand'' it but can't explain it to myself in words. Is it this, understand things intuitively ? Understand without going in too much details ?

And a last question, if maths are created (discovered?) by man, how come we can't understand everything about them ? Do they exist independently of man and have their own way of working ?

Hi, just a question that I've been wondering : Can the brain understand every mathematical idea or you must take some things for granted and trust in them ? Because sometimes I try to understand everything and I find it not that easy ? For example, I can understand simple things like 2+2 =4 but I don't think every concept in math is that clear as adding, substracting, etc.

So my final question in general is, should I try to understand everything about the mecanism of something ( in math) ? What do you people do in these situations ? Do you understand everything like it was your own creation? Thanks

Thank you, I finaly understood ! It makes sense lol  (Im wondering how come I didn't know that....)

#311 Re: Help Me ! » question... » 2012-12-22 10:25:32

Yes, here's an example where I could reduce  : 4/2 . 1/8  (The 4 and the 8 divided by 4) but in the previous one, it wouldn't be possible. WHy ?

#312 Re: Help Me ! » question... » 2012-12-22 10:03:28

By 8 on the two sides, isn't it possible ?

This may seem like a wierd question, but here I go : If I have  8/3 . 8/5 = 64/15 why can't I reduce my two 8's at the beginning ? I can reduce my fractions diagonaly or I can reduce the number above the fraction sign and the other one below it. But why can't I do it in a straight line ? Would it be to hard to explain and I have to take it like it is ? Thank you (I like to understand how things works ^^)

#314 Re: Help Me ! » probability » 2012-12-17 15:08:50

It's not written in English ... ^^ Even, it's only exercises, nothing more lol

#315 Re: Help Me ! » probability » 2012-12-17 11:29:13

oh yes you're right. i noticed i missed one, so thanks ! finaly, my book wasnt right ! thanks you two !

#316 Re: Help Me ! » probability » 2012-12-17 10:55:28

Omg im happy to know that because in my book it says its 4/32 ?!? And here is another one, what is the prob that it will land 3 times on head and 2 times on tails ? I got 9/32 but in my book it says 8/32 ?!? There is always 1 of difference, we could say it's an error ? Thanks !

I have just a little question about this : If I toss a coin 5 times, what is the probability of getting 4 tails and 1 head ? I think the answer is 5/32 ? Is this any good ? THanks

#318 Re: Help Me ! » Factorisation of big numbers... » 2012-08-23 08:22:44

I know that 2016 = 2 exponent 5 . 3 exponent 2 . 7

#319 Re: Help Me ! » Factorisation of big numbers... » 2012-08-23 08:17:29

No, but that's what I'Ve been talking about. I have all the prime numbers, but I don't know how to find the others....

#320 Re: Help Me ! » Factorisation of big numbers... » 2012-08-23 08:11:51

arbre.gifI have 2016, the prime numbers at the end, now I need to find the others... I'll be creating you a diagram,

I can't post a link sad

#321 Re: Help Me ! » Factorisation of big numbers... » 2012-08-23 08:00:57

Well, basically, I have the number 2016 and must find its factors in a tree of factors. Could you show me how to proceed ? I don't know if my question is clear^^

#322 Re: Help Me ! » Factorisation of big numbers... » 2012-08-23 07:55:41

Mmmh.. An example would be helpful. I already have the prime numbers of 2016. Would that be helpful to find the others ?

Hey everyone...I have a little question : How do you factorise big numbers ?

I could just use my calculator but that would be too long... Is there any technique known that I could use ? Take this number : 2016. I must put it in a tree of factors... But there's too many possibilites ..

Thanks !
