#3201 Re: Help Me ! » formulae for writing a letter s using 8 mm radius » 2006-02-22 11:06:06

Do they have to mesh together really artistically??  On the 10mm wide, do you mean to spread the two circles apart by 2 mm, so we aren't talking about any white space on either side like fonts have when you say 10mm?  Do you want the center of the top to the left or to the right of the center of the bottom.  Can we use any straight line segments to improve the look in
the middle or at the ends??  Do you want equations, like algebra??  Do you want points of center plus angles where angle 0 is to the right, and angle sweeps counter clockwize like in trig?

#3202 Re: Help Me ! » formulae for writing a letter s using 8 mm radius » 2006-02-22 09:20:35

I think you mean 8mm diameters or 4mm radii for the two curving parts of the S.

#3203 Re: Help Me ! » probability » 2006-02-22 09:16:20

Boy, that was not explained very well.
You know the probability of a certain chosen two distinct objects being beside one another.
If it in a row, that probability is the same as a circular linked list if you add in the missing link.

#3204 Re: Help Me ! » probability » 2006-02-22 08:57:04

I just made a discover that has to do with this problem.
If you connect a counting number of object in a line and figure out how many
are beside one another, it is also true that if you add one more object to the line and
link it to the other end forming a circle, now the pairing probability is the SAME!!!!!

#3205 Re: Help Me ! » Did I simplify these sqareroot problems right??? I sure hope so! » 2006-02-22 07:10:22

So you are right mom on 1 and 2 because they got exactly 8 times your answers!
But your 3rd last one: 38sqrt 8/64= You said you got 3sqrt3/4, please explain youself.

#3206 Re: Help Me ! » Parcels and Packets » 2006-02-22 07:00:04

Since your professor has given such an erroneous question, I would tell him the answer is that the packages cannot be combined into parcels, and therefore he must send them out separately!

#3207 Re: Help Me ! » Discreet proof help needed » 2006-02-22 06:51:31

I am beginning to think you are right about perfect squares having an odd number of factors, so doors open because the square root factor is only counted once, and all the other factors are paired up.  Nice work!

#3208 Re: Help Me ! » Discreet proof help needed » 2006-02-22 06:48:35

I really like the locker question.  I am so tempted just to program it and get a result, but that's kind of cheating isn't it.  I could show the results graphically after each student inorder to learn.
Wouldn't all the prime numbered doors be shut, and all those with and even number of factors like #2 ( 1 & 2) the door would be closed, and those with an odd number of factors like locker number 9 (1 & 3 & 9) would be open? And the prime numbers would all have an even number of factors (1 & #), so the door would be closed?

#3209 Re: Help Me ! » Parcels and Packets » 2006-02-22 06:00:18

I have two questions?  Is n different for each package?  How many packages are there?
I don't really get what you are trying to say.  But it seems interesting.

#3210 Re: This is Cool » Sum of the reciprocals of the squares of the prime numbers » 2006-02-22 05:55:10

And if Prime[] returns 0 if not prime, then why don't you get divide by zero error?
Tell me about Prime[]
Does prime return infinitywhen not prime?

#3211 Re: Help Me ! » sector » 2006-02-21 13:45:37

I suggest making one out of paper and labelling highlighting the dimensions that
you know or can derive.  This experiment will be very fun.    If you don't have
a protractor, you can use a watch or clock and the 160 degrees is approximately
from 3.333333 minutes to 30 minutes using the arc of a minute hand.

#3213 Re: Help Me ! » sector » 2006-02-21 13:18:46

I made one out of paper and it appears to be about 22 degrees or half of a 45.
The whole angle appears to be about 45 degrees.  I assume you want half of that.

Hey, we spoke understandably.  Glad we all helped!

I can't think of a solution to the 365.25 turns and needing a lot of patience to watch it.

#3216 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Cow Bull 1 » 2006-02-21 03:42:21

30,576 ways is 14 x 14 x 13 x 12, but you are using the letter F, which ganesh originally said it only goes from 0 to E.
But hexadecimal goes to F.  so combos = 15 x 15 x 14 x 13.

#3217 Re: Help Me ! » sin18 » 2006-02-21 03:24:41

The confusion is that the sin of 18 could also be a half, and then they say no its not,
and use the other factor and use -b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)/2a.

#3225 Re: Maths Is Fun - Suggestions and Comments » Time Zones » 2006-02-20 14:52:44

Daylight savings is in the summer, I agree I just heard that, and so in the winter the the sun probably is most direct at noon, while in the summer the noon time comes before the sun is overhead.   I wonder if that statement is true.  Also there are at least one place on Earth that has their time zone off by 1/2 an hour!  Maybe NewFoundland?  But that would be tough to show.
Finally due to the size of the bitmap viewing area, the +12, which is the -12 hour time zone doesn't fully print the time, you can
go from one end to the other to see each half of its display.

And I have been watching the sun clock for weeks now and keep it as an open window in my browser.
This new one is spectacular!!!!!!!  I don't know how you do it.  And on the solar system one, it is very nice, but to
be more accurate, you would sacrifice movement of the earth around the sun, or would have to spin the earth
faster because it only spins maybe thirty times around in one year instead of 365.25
Did you try it at 365 spins, and not like how slowly it went around the sun??
But I must stress that the work is totally incredible!!!!!!!!
