Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Yeah I'll work on that improper fractions to mixed numbers thing later. It seems like a good thing to know.

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Of course it is. Just think while all the other students are being taught fractions do not exist. You will remember that is not true.

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Hey, look I have more! sad

Okay, could you please tell me if I am doing this right so far:

7(2x +  6) = 1

14x + 42 = 1
       - 42  - 42

14x = -41

1/14 * 14x = -41 * 1/14

= -41/14

I'm a little hazy on what to next, so I wanted to be sure it wasn't because what I have so far is wrong.

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Hi;

There is nothing to be hazy about. You have solved for x and are done.
Make the last step x = = -41/14
Good work!

I am so glad that you have learned to think on your own 2 feet. I am proud of you.

Wait, are you serious? Here, I thought I didn't know what I was doing...

Okay, do I need to make it a mixed number or something, though?

Hello Sarah;

How are you today? Do you know I am freezing here?

Hi misheeru;

misheeru wrote:

I am always serious.

A little effort goes a long way. I knew a guy, he was the best in the world in his field. People said he was lucky, a genius, oh he is not that good etc.
Believe me, I know, there was nothing special about him.
Know what his secret was, he just worked a little bit harder than everyone else!

Okay, do I need to make it a mixed number or something, though?

-41 / 14 is an improper fraction, can you make it proper?

Why are you creating mixed fractions?? Blasphemy -- and serves no helpful purpose that I can think of.

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

H Fzang;

About the only thing I can think of is that when she gets to integration of rational functions then reducing to a proper fraction is mandatory.

Also, is not 2 dollars and 40 cents preferable to 12 / 5 dollars?

ok so 14 kids and forty-one cents? Every kid needs the same amount. So every kid gets 28 cents with 13 leftover.

So: um... 13 and twenty-eight over forty, right? How am I looking so far?

Hi misheeru;

How am I looking so far?

Not too good. You look like someone balancing the US budget.

41 cents is to be spread out among 14 kids. Now you know they can not all get 28 cents.
       ------
14 / 41      = ?

Okay - when you put it like that, I see the convenience.

However, it'll just get more complicated for further use, and especially in advanced math. Fractions like 1/2 makes sense if you substitute with apples and babies, however something like x/(x+n)! hardly makes sense in "the real world", which is why I think it would be good practice just to leave the fractions as fractions, instead of chopping them up in whole numbers and smaller fractions.

TC is probably not going to need my killer fraction for anything. I was just trying trying to make a general statement for why it's "bad practice".

Never said it was wrong though. Keep up the good work bobbym smile

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Hi Sarah;

Thanks, but she is the one who is doing well.

Hi Fzang;

Never said it was wrong though. Keep up the good work bobbym

Let's look at some ideas here. The fractions:

The left one is improper and the right one is proper. In math it is necessary to be able to manipulate expressions into different forms. Sometimes it gives new insight, sometimes it makes it easier to work with.

however something like x/(x+n)! hardly makes sense in "the real world

Good one! I hope to change your mind on this topic. You see math is real. That  expression could relate to something real. Take Vegas for instance, the whole stinking town is built on math. People think there is know way to understand luck. Actually luck in the mathematical sense is entirely understood. Math in all its forms permeates our civilization. We have built our world on it, that is why we see it everywhere.
