Why are there so few schools in the jungles of eastern Africa?
Because there are too many cheetahs.
Why is the cheetah bad at hide and seek?
Because he's always spotted!
You're most welcome, nappid97.
I look forward to your new additions.
All the best!
P.S. The puzzles are tough!
Okay. So that means, if different orders are counted, we use:
And if they don't count, we use:
I think I've got it, at least till here now.
(a) choose one of the 8 columns that you're going to put your pebble in, and then (b) choose a square in the column you've selected to put the second pebble.
This is understandable. But where did 8×7=56 come from?
I suppose 8 stands for the number of columns and 7 stands for the number of squares left in the column after one square is filled by the first pebble. Is this right?
If so, why do multiply it?
Hi zetafunc!
Thanks for the reply. I'm still new to permutation - combinations, so this seems to be a mouthful for me!
Is this a general formula? For example, if there are 50 cards and I have to pick any 5, then will I say:
is the no. of combinations?
I do have a few more questions, but perhaps it's best to clear them one at a time.
Hi, nappid97
Welcome to the forum!
I downloaded the app. It's really good and works perfectly well! Great app!
If 2 pebbles are placed in a random square of a square grid having 64 squares, then what is the probability of the pebbles being on the same row or column?
I have no idea as to how I should work this out. Help please!
One of the best jokes I've seen!
It's been five days since I had a peek...
Welcome, CurlyBracket! That name sounds cool enough!
Thank you! This is my first experiment with it. I'm glad it sounds good. Also, yours looks quite interesting. What's the idea behind it?
Hello!
Hello, richieremington7! Welcome to the forum!
Hi Ganesh,
Agnishom wrote:What is NCTM KenKen? I couldn't find it by a google search
i think kenken is math puzzle which teaches basic arithmetic and it looks similar to the sudoku
Yes, NCTM KenKen is a puzzle like sudoku.
But it has certain "cages", and a number on top. The numbers inside the cage should, by addition, subtraction or multiplication, produce the number give at the top.
Other than that, it follows the same rules as sudoku - the same number cannot be repeated in a row, column or cage.
Hi ganesh
Hi ganesh,
Hi ganesh,
Have you read H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine"?
I had, a few years ago, and I was thinking about it today. In the first or second chapters, there was a small paragraph, where the Time Traveler explains how he realised that time is a dimension, thereby proposing that we live, not in a 3 dimensional world, but in a 4 dimensional one.
The book is (unfortunately) now in another city, so I can't say it quote-for-quote. But here's what I do remember -
Let's say I make a cube. There are, according to most people, three dimensions, namely, Length, Breadth and Height. The names might change but the inherent meaning does not.
Now, I, being a most dutiful person, make a cube including all of these dimensions, LBH, but do you really think that cube, for all its worth, will exist?
Will it be a real, tangible cube?
Will it truly just be there?
Well, no.
For a very simple reason: the cube does not last. It does not last for the trillionth of a billionth of a second. It's non-existent without time. Length, Breadth and Height are not worth anything without it. Thus, time is equally important as them. If not more.
So we conclude (said the Time Traveler): "Time is a dimension."
Now for my question: Is this true? Is this a logical, feasible idea or is it just absurd fiction with scientific jargon?
What do you think?
Hi ganesh,
Hi ganesh,
Hi ganesh,
Thanks, Mathegocart.
Yes, I'm sure it will be rewarding.
Hi Ganesh,
Hi Bob and ganesh,
Thanks for all the useful links. I tried my best to understand the 'Sine Cos Tan in 4 Quadrants ' part, but I find the fact that they skipped Coordinate Geometry at school is largely preventing me from doing so. So now my plan is to study some of that, and then return to Trigonometry again. I haven't watched the video yet, but I will as soon as I get some time off.
Thanks for your help! I'll reply to this thread if I face any more issues.
