I think the Harry Potter books are works of such originality.
  J. K. Rowling brought the idea of witches and wizards into a whole new light; I don't believe she copied the idea from Jill Murphy. Murphy said that witches and wizards made spells and potions for sorcery, Rowling said that witches and wizards live with their magic powers, use them in everyday life, and hide themselves from the real world that we all live in. She also gives good reasons for myths and legends such as the Phoenix and dragons etc, that we have made up, to actually exist (even though they don't).
And on top of all that, she wound a mysterious story in the novels, unlike the "childish adventures" of Mildred Hubble, which have to relevance nor referance to each other. There was no secret about Mildred's past....no dark bad guy about to turn up any second and kill everyone, no secrets the reader craves released every once in a while - the Harry Potter books have easily outshone the original idea we're talking about, because they are totally different.

In a run down saloon in the roughest region of Texas, One-eye Pete and his gang sat playing poker. There were five men around the table - a rougher, tougher looking group of people you'd never seen in your life. Just to be allowed in the gang you had to skin your own grandma with a rusty potato peeler.
After several games, the men started a new one, but one of them eyed the dealer narrowly. Just as the cards were being dealt out again he leapt up and yelled "I says your cheatin'!"
It was an unwise comment. The dealer flung out a gun and shot the offender dead, and naturally the sheriff was then sent for. The sheriff was a giant of a man who never went anywhere without two pistols hanging from his belt. He was so mean and tough that he had skinned both his grandmas in a manner too horrible to relate. However, even though he was a stranger to fear, even for the gang, and the incident had been witnessed by everyone in the bar, he was unable to arrest any of the men who had taken part in the game.
  Why was this?

Basically, my mind has been wiped and reconstructed, when I entered what I call the stages of life where one begins to mature. My eyes see only the future and the present now, and I can’t be trusted to look back on certain things. It wasn’t only until yesterday I found that something from the present meant to inform me you were all still here. I can’t believe you actually remembered me, actually have that thing that lets you look in all of those ways. Here I am, after completing another orbit of a period of time in my life without visiting this place – but what has that little leave given and taken from me? I bet when you clicked on the thread for this post before you read it, you were thinking, “Wow, I get to find out what this drifter of a member of MathsIsFun.com has got to say for herself. What has Rora been doing all this time? What has she got for us to spill?” Well, I’ve got heaps I can say, only I think that I’ve changed dramatically since I last left a message on here. How I say it might seem sort of….. different, to how I might have said it when we were all that little bit younger. I’ve in a way turned myself over completely, because I’m constantly thinking about my future nowadays.

School has been extremely demanding over the last year and a half. Thirteen and a half GCSEs are in progress, along with a BTEC course in Business Studies. The time I use keeping up with this does tend to leave me exhausted if I’m having a bad day. I couldn’t get used to that at the start, but I eventually learned to make myself be motivated, and hopefully it will be worth it in the end. Unfortunately, though, when things started getting a bit forceful, I had to break up the band I used to be in, and they couldn’t find anyone else to take up my role. I do see light on the horizon however, because I get to leave this year for a sixth form or college (I haven’t made my mind up yet), which I’m really looking forward to, wherever it may be. I want to do maths, biology, music, psychology and dance at A-Level – I think. English and Physics were considerations, but I don’t think I like either of those as much as the others.

I have a job, which I started last November. I work as a waitress in a resturant on Saturdays. I like it, but I wouldn’t do it forever. I only really do it for the money, heeheehee….which I put straight in the bank. I want to save for the future. Everyone says I’m a tight miseryguts, which I suppose I am, but I just like having tons of money behind me, because it makes me feel so secure. I definitely want to go to university (studying what, don’t ask me) but my old ambition of teaching maths there has changed. I have absolutely no idea what I want to do now, because I like so many subjects.

The highlight of 2006 for me, I think, was in October. I took part in a mathematical German exchange, at the Lessing-Gynasium school in Norderstedt; if you’re interested, you might want to find out what they have to say about it because my school couldn’t be bothered to mention it on their website. We had to stay with German hosts, who spoke amazingly hilarious English at times. Once, at breakfast, my partner’s dad was trying to tell me what they had on the table, and he said: “We have here, different breeds of bread.” Her mam was also quite funny, when she was explaining why she’d gone to the doctor’s, apparently it was because she had baggage (back ache). When I spoke German to them, though, sometimes they laughed at me, so it figures. There’s quite a long story to it all, but by the time I’ve finished I think the post will probably take up about five presses of the “Page Down” button to read.
I also broke my arm twice in four months last year, both times doing the same thing. There was a good side to that, though, I never broke my dominant hand, so I could still write.

We’ve all done a lot since I left my last time gap behind me, and I’ve been all the while forgetting about what has already come and noticing only what is and has to. It seems to me as though nothing can distract me from what I want now, I can’t remember whatever happened yesterday, nor the day before, nor even the major things before that; I simply don’t have that quality in me anymore. But now, as I sit here, fingers jittering rapidly across this hard, grey keyboard, sitting in a cold room with my eyes glued on a screen watching myself freely and digitally ramble, something actually makes me aware that I’m feeling quite nostalgic, and weirdly younger, as I remember, being here again.

Rod, you are getting very good at this, I love it all!
Is it possible that you can make a thing that lets you move the protractor and the pencil around?

1. That is a good idea actually, if we were short of people, which we probably will be.

2. I think it would be good to either cut down the parts, or give people more than one part, like you suggested. It really depends on how many people sign up.

#68 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Werewolf - Excellent new game we could try! » 2005-12-04 08:21:12

1. Yes, they do. The one in charge says something along the lines of: Mathsyperson, you are a werewolf with justlooking! You have until 7 o'clock GMT to decide who you will devour...

2. Votes for banishment are made in public. Even the werewolves must vote to avoid suspicion.

3. If the werewolves are stopped by protectors, yes, there is still a vote. And, I think I missed out, when someone is saved by the protectors, they are not told that it was them who was saved.

4. When the werewolves kill someone, the person in charge puts a note next to their name on the list the next "morning," so everyone knows who has died. The protectors know they have failed, the werewolves know they succeeded. Nobody ever knows who is protecting who apart from the protectors themselves.

5. I've been thinking of that myself. That's probably the biggest problem. Maybe power can be assigned to certain people to view certain threads? I don't know if that's actually possible. I hope it is, then it would be solved.

6. I have that sorted out. The "day" lasts as long as it takes for the update of the players (about two minutes) and for everyone to vote (one or two days). In fact, I think it'd be better if there was a deadline to vote, in case people are busy and don't have the time.
The "night" depends on how fast the protectors, werewolves and seer decide how to use their powers. In this case I'd make a deadline for all and if they don't respond by that time, they don't get to use their power that night.

7. Yes, I've taken a break. smile

I like that game, it's well designed, and it's addictive when you first get into it. I didn't encounter any bugs when I played it, which I did twice. It hasn't ran slow either. Have you fixed it, or is it my computer just having a good day?

Some people have just taught me how to play a new game, like wink murder, but better, and much more complicated. We could give it a try, if you all wanted to.

Each person playing is a villager in a town. The person in charge (who isn't playing, but will take care of most of the game) selects any two villagers and informs them they are werewolves, any three people and informs them they are protectors, and any one person and informs them they are the seer. Each of these people have powers that effect the game. All the remaining people (the normal villagers) have no power whatsoever.

The Seer:
The seer acts like a physic. Every "night" (the game is divided into a day/night cycle which is controlled by the person in charge) theSeer will inform the person in charge who they want to use their power on. The person in charge tells the Seer the status of that person (werewolf, normal villager or protector). The seer has a deadline to decide upon who.

The protectors:
After the deadline of the seer's descision, the protectors must email each other and decide on one person to protect from the werewolves. They can protect anyone other than themselves and the person in charge, and also have a deadline to decide upon who.

The werewolves:
When the protectors have finished, the werewolves email each other and agree on which villager to eat. They can pick anybody other than themselves and the person in charge. Once they have decided they will tell the person in charge, who will post the result the next "morning." If the person they have chosen to eat was the protectors' choice for protection, the werewolves will have no effect.

The next morning, after the seer has used his/her power, the protectors have protected someone and the werewolves have eaten somebody, the town panics after the mysterious death of this person and everyone votes to who they think
did the crime (is a werewolf). Whoever recieves the highest vote, regardless who it is or what powers they have, is banished from the town and is out of the game. The game ends when either: there are no werewolves left, or: the only people left are werewolves.

The normal villagers don't know who the protectors, werewolves or seer are.
The protectors don't know who the werewolves, villagers or seer are (this way they can protect a werewolf without knowing it and this will have no effect).
The werewolves don't know who the protectors, villagers or seer are.
The seer doesn't know who the protectors, werewolves or villagers are until he/she uses his/her power to determine one person per night.

The person in charge will set the deadlines for everyone, and control the night/day cycle. The person in charge will also keep everyone updated on who has been banished, and who is still in the village.

I may have missed some stuff out, but I think that's the rules unabridged. If you have any questions, ask, please. Don't worry, it took me ages to understand the whole thing myself!
And, if we are playing, I would be in charge.

Wow...what do you do with it? Sorry, bad question. Where do you keep it so it doesn't slither away?!

I have a large glass tank I keep on my desk. There's a ventilated lid, and I keep the tank locked unless I want to take it out/feed it. I feed it frozen mice and stuff once a week. The person who sold us it said that if you want to pick it up and carry it around, the best way to do it is to have it around your neck. I can scare people that way. Heeheehee.....
