Sorry, unless I misunderstand something, I am trying to make a suggestion to bring it back (and I'm not trying to bring math into this, sorry if I give that idea).  Now the reason I bring this up is this is actually a topic I care about, and I personally don't see it as resolved myself.  I've never talked to the troll myself (that I'm aware of), but this is a very controversial subject and I know at least myself would be interested to hear new people speak on this still.

[edit]  I e-mailed this question instead so I removed it from the post.

#27 Re: Help Me ! » 9999999 = 1 » 2016-01-01 17:22:16

Okay, well the biggest issue I see is it typically comes down to two sides.  0.9... = 1, because the 9s infinitely repeat.  It is because it infinitely repeats (trying to keep it simple w/o all the proofs), that you can't do anything to it and you use it to exactly be 1.  A simple example (I think) is 1 divided by 3 = 0.3...  If you multiply that by 3, you get 0.9...  Therefore, it = 1.  However, the other side sees it as a different number, and will try to fix it by working with the infinite 9s similar in a way where it seems finite.  For instance 0.9... + 0.0...1 = 1, therefore 0.9...≠1.  Now all this stuff has been said before, so no need to go into details, however, connecting all this to people who might be seen as trolling: when one side does not understand the other side, frustration occurs.  People begin arguing they either aren't listening to one another, and begin to feel that the others are just repeating themselves.  The problem occurs when people begin name calling and such as that creates basically an insulting game between the two.  This can completely lose focus and lead to arguments between each other, spamming and other things.  So my point in all of this, is was it really all trolling?  Because couldn't it have simply been something that got out of hand?

Side Note:  Sorry for bringing up old examples that were discussed before, I was only using them to make a point while trying to keep it simple.

#28 Re: Maths Is Fun - Suggestions and Comments » Chatroom » 2016-01-01 17:09:39

Well, that is why I'm still suggesting it, so whoever is able can see it.  If they don't want it, then so be it.  I just thinking it would help and if I gave it some thought, I could probably make a few arguments for its case.

#29 Re: Maths Is Fun - Suggestions and Comments » 0.9... = 1; Is it gone? » 2016-01-01 17:08:33

Okay, so there is a new topic open for it?  Was that the one I was talking in?

#30 Re: Maths Is Fun - Suggestions and Comments » Chatroom » 2016-01-01 16:34:29

Well I know this is probably pretty old, but I still think it is a good idea.  It also is able to be moderated more easily than one might think.  On one of my forums I had in the past (before I deleted it), I was planning on doing this with Chattango.  I had both a members and moderators only section, and attaching it ONLY to those pages would have restricted guests from being able to use it.  The downfall would have been to create an account elsewhere, but it would also keep the clutter on the website itself down, and could talk to people more directly if they are available.  Plus, say any trolls who joined, could still be kicked or banned.  Now I'm not suggesting specifically Chattango (if that even exists anymore).  But I'm pretty sure there are some easier ways to set it up and keep it noticeably more moderated.  If there are other issues, I'm just simply making a suggestion.  But I really do think it could help...

#31 Re: Puzzles and Games » The Monty Hall Problem » 2016-01-01 16:24:01

Good explanation Bob Bundy!  That's actually how I've learned to explain it to people (a bit different, I use an illustration).  It's what I had to mostly start doing whenever I bring it up to people because they usually don't understand very well if I simply explain it to them.

Before proceeding, I wanted to know if there were going to be NO more topics on this or if the idea was to only keep one up.  Because I know the biggest one (http://www.mathisfunforum.com/viewtopic.php?id=658) was taken down, and I'd like to at the very least know why if not argue about putting it back up.  I briefly mentioned it already in another post, but didn't want to take the other one too off topic so decided to make a new post and see if I can bring up a discussion here.  At the very least, if it's not negotiable, then at least find out why.

A troll?  From what I was reading, it seemed like everybody was serious about what they thought (though a lot went unexplained and people from both sides were getting frustrated).  Was it really all trolling?  Hmm, should I make a new topic to discuss this, I'm afraid it'll take this topic off-topic?

One of the things I thought was pretty interesting was something my friend showed me some time back.  Very basic and easy, but amazingly I had never thought about it before.  0 / 0 = undefined, why?  Well, that's been answered here before and there are LOTS of reasons for that already.  But when you start thinking anything * 0, you get 0.

So 1 * 0 = 0.  2 * 0 = 0.  3.9425 * 0 = 0.  (pi) * 0 = 0.  So then if you divide by 0, you'd think you'd get the reverse.  If you divided by 0, you could get any real number, no?  My friend (I think jokingly) brought up 0 / 0 = (a variable).  So for example, 0 / 0 = v, because v * 0 = 0.  And while that may not be correct, I actually thought that was pretty cool and wanted to share it with other people.  Any thoughts?

I've been reading through a lot of the old stuff (I haven't been on in a few years), I was surprised to see all those topics closed.  I would like to argue how keeping it open for discussion can still be useful, but I won't do that on this topic.

#36 Re: Help Me ! » 9999999 = 1 » 2016-01-01 12:20:15

Is this the only topic (on this subject) still left open?

[edit] I'm adding this, because I should note I have no intention of bringing the argument back, I was just curious because everything else on the issue I found seemed to be closed.

#37 Re: Puzzles and Games » The Achilles diary paradox » 2016-01-01 10:04:09

Sorry, but I'm having a lot of difficulty understanding what this paradox is saying.  I'll give a few places that I seem to have difficulty interpreting...

As compensation for the error the gods allow him to tear out the pages of the diary in any order he chooses, each page determining his fate for the day.

The issue I have with this is I'm not entirely sure if the pages he tears out is what occurs that day or if by tearing it out, the pages effect for that day no longer happens.

For the first 364 days he tears out the pages corresponding to his first 364 birthdays

The biggest issue I have understanding this, specifically using the word 'corresponding' in this case really confuses me.  Is he tearing out every page that is or is not his birthday?

There are a few other minor parts I'm having difficulty with, but I think if someone would be able to explain those two parts to me, I'll be able to understand the rest.  Unfortunately, I won't be able to put my thoughts on the matter until I understand it.

#38 Re: Puzzles and Games » Infinity minus infinity » 2012-12-01 13:35:00

I would say undefined because infinity isn't a number.  Infinity can be a difficult concept to understand when using it in ways such as that.  I might suggest you look here to find out more about it...

Hi Edward45!

Welcome to the forum!

Out of curiosity, what interested you in this math forum?  Anything you needed help with?

Huh?  Had me fooled too.  I have to say it is definitely very unique.

#42 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Scientists, our benefactors? » 2012-11-24 10:54:43

Hmm, don't quite get what you mean, but I got to go for today, unless I'm on later tonight...see you.

#43 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Scientists, our benefactors? » 2012-11-24 10:31:50

Hmm, yes, I got a little bit but had to run errands with my brother today.  Sorry about that, just got into one of those moments where you start missing the past...

#44 Re: This is Cool » 0.9999....(recurring) = 1? » 2012-11-24 00:21:15

Oh, I think I might see, because 0.¯9 never ends, but 1 ends, is that correct?

#45 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Scientists, our benefactors? » 2012-11-24 00:17:01

I don't dwell on it, but it does come to my mind.  For example, I can never forget loved ones that have been lost, memories of things long past that bring so much nostalgia.  I can't help but stop and think about these things from time to time.  Though, I don't dwell there, just never forget and miss.  Anyway, I think I'm probably done for now, maybe be back later...

#46 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Scientists, our benefactors? » 2012-11-24 00:01:17

Yes, change is inevitable, and everything changes.  It is only natural that as more time passes, it becomes more and more noticeable.  Can be happy for some changes, but it doesn't stop you from missing the past either...

#47 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Scientists, our benefactors? » 2012-11-23 23:50:48

I don't know, my changes are more based around my beliefs, but it has always been pretty similar.  I might not be the same way I was even a year ago as a whole, but I'm still fairly similar to how I was then.  Looking throughout more time though, I can easily notice greater change.  *sigh*

#48 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Scientists, our benefactors? » 2012-11-23 23:36:08

Hmm, I guess that depends on what exactly your doing.  There are lots of things I've changed, and lots of things I haven't.  I don't know, I'd say that is a pretty debatable statement.  So if you change every few years, then that was only a short amount of time you were like that?

#49 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » help me » 2012-11-23 23:16:35

What do you mean by that is a point?  I don't understand what you by that at all actually.

#50 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Scientists, our benefactors? » 2012-11-23 23:12:07

Was it really that arguably stupid though?  Doesn't seem like that to me.  Either way, does that mean that what you do now is entirely different then what you used to do?
