Hi Zach.

Nothing much really. Rod is thinking about making a trading game and you know Rora has been back for a couple of days.

What's been going down with you? University?

You have to have an interview just for work experience? All we have to send is a cover letter and resume.

Rora's back again! And thanks, I like it too!

We have to do work experience for school this year. Anyone else?

Wait I'm actually really confused, how did Rowling win the court case and what book did she allegedly copy?

I can't exactly remember - but I think the main character's name was Potter. She also may have 'borrowed' some terms and given them new meanings ... muggles was one of them, I think.

#232 Re: Guestbook » i dont love cats » 2007-02-19 18:04:41

I like cats. But I don't own one. I like cats when other people have to clean up their mess and pick feline fur off their clothes. I think I would like a cat, but like mathsyperson, I think the novelty would wear off pretty quickly.

We have two Siamese-looking cats (brother and sister), a black cat and a tabby from around the neighbourhood that visit our garden everyday though. One's outside right now ...

mathsy, MyCatHatesYou = strange. But oddly, quite funny.

Yes, I agree! Our form teacher gave us all strawberry Freddos ... and we had a Valentine's Day 'party' in Ethics. It was more like an excuse to eat food during class, but it was still good. We got to eat cake while watching 'School Ties' ...

Anyone have any failed New Year's resolutions that they want to try again? big_smile

I'm pretty much as stuck as everyone else.

Hello satvik, thanks for posting.

What type of 'sums'?

I'm not really sure what you mean, but have a look in the Exercises section for questions. Or maybe you want to practice multiplication?

#239 Re: Maths Is Fun - Suggestions and Comments » Forum Enhancements » 2007-02-11 17:44:49

I like the idea about the hide tags.

But I'm not so sure about post count determined by length of posts. Would that just create longer spam? People may feel they have to post longer, which may lead to pointless padding-out of posts ... ?

#240 Re: Help Me ! » Factoring (AlgebraII) » 2007-02-07 17:47:39

Or maybe you mean factoring, as in 'factorise 12x² + 4x + 3'?

There are many different techniques which help factorise different problems, so it might be more helpful if you tell us what you need help factoring.

But a general, starting rule is look for a common factor.

Eg. Factorise 2x + 6.
First, we would check if our two terms, 2x and 6, have a common factor. And they do. 2x and 6 can both be divided by 2, which makes 2 a common factor. So 2 can be taken out by dividing each term by two, which gives us 2(x + 3).

#241 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Linux » 2007-02-04 22:29:56

A friend showed me these three Linux-related videos:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lawkc3jH3ws
Hehe, this is set to extreme-sounding music to try make it more interesting ...

http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-199899523054020719&q=linux
Quite a long video, but it shows what you can do.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4471114863140451531
This one is funny.

From looking at those, I like what I see. But I'm probably not going to move to Linux anytime soon ... for one, the school technicians wouldn't be very happy!

#243 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Future job; what do you want to do? » 2007-02-03 12:13:23

I don't have much of an idea either.

I like maths, but I'm not sure I would want to be doing it all the time, or if I would be good enough. Learning languages is fun, but I don't really think I would want to be a professional translator or anything like that. Science and computing/technology/programming are also things I might look into. And I love music, so that may be a possibility! But a down side of working in the arts is that you don't get paid much ...

I'm only sure of the things I don't want to be: a vet, doctor, nurse, dentist (all jobs in the health sector, really!).

Hopefully over the next few years I'll get more of an idea.

Hey Rora. That was a great post.

Thanks for dropping by. It was fantastic to read about what you've been doing.

I bet when you clicked on the thread for this post before you read it, you were thinking, “Wow, I get to find out what this drifter of a member of MathsIsFun.com has got to say for herself. What has Rora been doing all this time? What has she got for us to spill?”

Well, I actually thought this was going to be about a planet ... until I saw who wrote it!

#246 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Dealing with Procrastination » 2007-01-29 21:41:25

Yes, I always listen to music. And I started school today.

The only problem with playing music for me is that sometimes the thing I'm putting off is practicing an instrument or arranging a piece of music for school! So, the music actually stops me from practicing, if you know what I mean.

Things to stop procrastinating:
1. A tidy work area. I think this stops me getting distracted. My desk at the moment includes a massive pile of paper, pens, music, CDs, books, computer/camera cables and a ukulele. I don't get much work done ...
2. Prioritise things. Sometimes this works for me, sometimes it doesn't.
3. Set timelines for when things should be finished. Like, 'Colouring in my picture for art isn't as important as studying for my maths test, so in half an hour I'm going to stop working on art homework even if it isn't finished.' That was a bad example but you get the point hopefully.

Um, that's all for now I think. By tomorrow when the real homework starts I'll see if I have any more tips (if you can even call them that!).

#250 Re: Maths Is Fun - Suggestions and Comments » Yacht Dice Game (like Yahtzee) » 2007-01-24 20:26:50

I have an unlimited amount of rolls ... on the third roll, the game automatically selects all the dice but if I unclick them, I can keep rolling ... meaning I just keep rolling/unselecting until I get the combination I want.

Score: 315

Edit: So, if I could be bothered to cheat ...

Score: 375

I win.
