I think it is more like 60% of the people who will get a 2.1, I am not sure though.

That is even better. What are you worrying about?

Failing and wasting tens of thousands of pounds, not getting on with people, etc.

What are your options if you do not? 100% failure.

If I do not what?

If you do not go for it and risk the thousands of pounds it will be as if you already failed. Your earning and position potential will be zero. So here are your choices, 100% chance of failure or a 40% chance of failure...

I am going to try anyway. I would never just not go. Not going to university was not an option.

Never balk over choices that are not really choices. In chess we say those type of decisions are called "forced moves." We make them quickly and with a minimum of remorse.

I just feel like my life is about to change completely in a couple of weeks' time and I feel unprepared for that.

How is it going to change? Change is harder than you think.

Living on my own is probably the biggest thing.

Actually it is a cosmetic change. What you are remains fairly constant.

I don't know, though. Some people are unable to make the transition. H, for instance, had to go to the mental hospital shortly after going to university. Many others aren't able to live independently. I've lived at home for a few days on my own and can cook my own meals (albeit poorly), but for a whole year? I don't know entirely what to expect.

I just e-mailed one of the maths lecturers a question about past papers. He is probably thinking, what sort of weirdo looks at exam papers before the course has even started, much less in the summer holidays.

I would say that is definitely what he is thinking. He is probably also thinking that you are a martian that has come here to steal our math. He probably assumes you have a couple of heads and 8 or 10 eyes... Do you see the ridiculous conclusions that are caused by trying to imagine what someone else thinks? You have no way of knowing what is on his mind at this point.

You will be lonely but you will be able to exist on your own.

It was a joke. What he thinks is of no importance to me, I just want what I asked him for -- information.

I am supposed to find out what accommodation I've been allocated in in a couple of weeks' time. I told them I don't want to share a flat with anyone, so hopefully they will give me a single room. Whether or not I have to share a bathroom or kitchen was not specified (or if there even was a kitchen). If I want something of better quality I'd have to pay more, at the expense of living on a tighter budget. Given that I won't be doing any partying or clubbing, that will help cut the expenses.

You might enjoy being by yourself, you never know.

When you are young it is easy.

There are some advantages to being on my own -- no screaming from my sister and parents in the mornings. Doing whatever I like, etc...

But I will also have to do everything for myself, everything is my sole responsibility. I get the feeling that the first few weeks will be the hardest.

It will be a change from having everything done for you. It is a big headache but you will get used to it.

There are so many things that I feel I should have mastered before moving though. For instance, the other day I was making some rice and curry chicken and potatoes, and I took over an hour and a half just to remove all the fat, cut it up and wash it. 5 hours to make the whole thing. If I am a student I will struggle to find the time to do that...

You will develop the speed with practice. Some meals take a long time, so you will avoid them.

Well, I have a month to practice... I'll have to use that time as best I can.

They have just told me that I will get 1 shelf in a fridge to myself, with a padlock. That is a start, I do need to know how big it is though...
