My three ideas for it at the start of the year were determinism, knot theory, or Newton-Leibniz. I preferred the latter...

I agree, it is a very interesting topic. There are lots of implications it has too that I talked a bit about, too -- for instance, the notion of intellectual copyright (what does it mean to own an idea?), and the bickering among other mathematicians (especially Bernoulli, l'Hopital, Keill and de Duillier) that erupted over the course of the debate. I wanted to talk a bit about England (Newton) and Germany (Leibniz) possibly having an intellectual war, but it is only a 5000-word report (supplemented with a presentation and production log).

Yes, that is true. They did collaborate quite a lot, but there are a number of suspicious details -- for instance, Leibniz copying out Newton's manuscripts under his own notation. The notation plays a central role in the controversy too; Newton's notation was pretty poor (he denoted an integral by just putting a box around a variable!), and Leibniz's notation helped to swing mathematicians in favour of Leibniz. Leibniz and Newton themselves didn't even care about it by 1713-1716; it was others who continued to add fire to it.
