Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

Mostly, because they are the ones in charge right now.

Could be that your destiny is to be with a rich girl.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

In charge of what?

Hmm, could be. But I find it hard to relate to people who are much better off than me.

The mathematics world.

Me too.

How are they in charge of the mathematics world?

Ironically, the only girl who wasn't well off at all and had a similar financial background to me, was F...

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

It is said that you can tell the pezzanovante by where they sit in the dining hall at the IAS. For many years it was the logicians, they were replaced by the topologists.

They are convinced their specialty is the only true form of math and the rest is trivial. They withhold grants and tenure from other mathematicians whom they assume are trivial.

But I hope you are not walking around muttering to yourself as she is probably doing at this very moment.

You have had bad experiences with them, I take it?

I keep hearing she is a perfectly normal girl. Oh well, I gave up trying to understand her.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

Oh no, thank God. If they saw us in a corridor they would walk to the other side and keep their head down, or act like we were not even there. Mostly, the problems came from the bio-life sciences guys. They only like math when it agrees with their latest theory.

She is normal? In comparison to what?

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

It seems that way. My physics teacher today said that all you need to be able to do is plug numbers into these formulae, it doesn't matter if you don't understand why they work. Forget the maths behind it.

People tell me she is a lovely, sweet girl and that she would have been the perfect girlfriend for me. I disagree with them.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

I will go half way with him. The fact that you do not understand the math at present does not mean you can not use it. Over 99% of the population does not know why a car runs, why an airplane flies and why a computer can get a number.

Where I would disagree with him is that most of them do not know how to plug into a formula...

In order for her to be anybody's girlfriend she would have to realate to them. Have you ever seen her doing that?

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

Yes, but it is satisfying when you know why something works, I feel. It's not necessary of course, but an idea without an explanation has a half-baked feel to it. I agree that he doesn't need to know why the formula works to use it -- but he may run into a brick wall with a more complex problem.

Yes, that is true. My physics class is a prime example of this. If they don't understand the idea or how to use it, then they are in trouble.

I've seen her relating to her sister, and her female friends... she does seem like a very direct, firm kind of person though (doesn't beat around the bush).

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

It may be satisfying but the first line of my signature was not written by me. It was written by John Von Neumann who was considered the greatest mathematician of the 20th century. If he did not understand lots of it, what chance do we have. I try to understand, if I do then that is great. If I do not, I shelve it for later, hoping I am smarter 10 - 20 years down the road.

I meant with a guy, have she ever been seen talking or relating to one?

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

I make an attempt to understand what I can, but I don't like to accept everything I read... although a large amount of stuff that I have read I have just accepted. I like to see techniques of proof so you can see where their ideas came from, and maybe see if you can use similar methods to them to come up with your own ideas.

Yep, a few times, she seems to get on well with them. And on Facebook there were a few pictures of her hanging out with a few men.

Then it looks like it was a case of two people that did not gel.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

It seems that way, but we barely even got to talk to each other, or see each other, at all. We didn't gel because she didn't allow for any opportunity.

She was the one who was well-off, but hated PJ, never boasted about her wealth, loved to talk, very into feminism, whom I've known since I was 11/12.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

She's nice to talk to although seems a bit shy around me.

I don't know if she should be on my list or not, she feels more like a friend or acquaintance than a romantic possibility...

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

I'm not sure, I think she just feels a bit awkward having spoken to me so much online but almost never in person for a long time. I feel awkward about it too.
