Yes, it is encouraging. If only they gave out proper Mark schemes so you'd know exactly what mark you got, rather than an estimate...

There isn't a solution thread for 2010, because official mark schemes started in 2008.

For some reason I am finding STEP I 2011 a lot harder than STEP III 2010. The grade boundaries indicate that the former is much easier...

Yes, that is probably true. Some of these things can be terribly fiddly though.

I couldn't agree more. I was just working on a marbles in the urn problem. After 10 or 12 mistakes I got the right answer.

What makes it worse is the time limit. You have to try the right thing, otherwise you risk wasting time which could seriously hinder your performance...

Is the marbles in an urn question from STEP?

No, somehow it is worse. Those problems you at least know that somewhere, somehow there should be a solution to them. This problem came from his head and therefore always has the lurking danger that it is unbelievably difficult or impossible. Luckily, this one has a solution.

I have seen some textbooks that pose research type problems in the exercises but I think that is a little too much.

Oh, I know what you mean, like those extension puzzles you have at the end of an exercise? I had a similar experience with one such 'impossible' question... I did the Tower of Hanoi puzzle, which was just finding the optimal solution for n discs. But when that was extended to n discs and p pegs, that became really, really difficult. Only found out that it was an unsolved problem a year later.

anyway here's my problem...

Ok what I'm trying to do is create a table where football tactics counter each other in a numbered order. Such as like a filled in order of the below table...

This can be simplified into a 7x7 matrix table such as the below (by renaming the tactics, 1-7)

We have 3 rules that need to be adeared to:

1) There needs to be a different tactic in each row and each column. Essentially making like a sudoku puzzle.

2) Rows can't have the same 2 numbers reversed. i.e. 6, 7 should not be 7,6 elsewhere

3) Every number entered needs to have it's opposite entered. i.e. if Attacking is 2nd strongest vs Balanced, then Balanced is 2nd weakest vs Attacking. Here's an illustrated example...

I've been using this to assist me http://www.poisonmeatball.com/kenken/, however it doesn't take additional rules 2 & 3 into consideration.

Is this solvable?

It must mean she enjoys talking to me... but that's one thing I didn't really understand. She didn't talk to me that often, usually a reply every couple of days, sometimes a reply once a week. She hasn't talked about meeting up with me yet, either... it has been 6 months since I last saw this girl.
