Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

Hopefully things will start to improve...

adriana and I e-mailed quite a lot today -- 12 exchanges in total. I've had nothing like that for over 2 months. We talked quite a bit about STEP, she needed help on an easy number theory question so I did. She's supposedly done only a few questions (there are 1167 in total), which is not good only 10 weeks away from the exam. It was all school/work-related though. I remembered that I have an old Gmail account, so a couple of hours after our conversation, I asked her to add me on there so we could chat instantly instead of by e-mail. That would speed things up for sure, then it will be harder to ignore me.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

Told you she would email and that she would have a question or two for you to answer.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

Hmm. Seems I have provided her with an answer. Maybe I will hear from her in 2014 next, then...

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

Why not just wait a week or two before you reply next time she asks a math question?

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

Nope, just fair.

If you answer right away, she is only going to ignore you once she is finished with her questions. She doesn't mind ignoring you for 3 or more weeks and then when she needs you...

I realise but believe me, that would prove your worth to her

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

Hmm, I am not sure what to do. Initially I thought she was just using me for maths help but now we are talking via instant chat, every day and half the time she is initiating. She went to a university maths open day (at Warwick) and she says she felt lonely (too shy to talk to anyone) and that she wished I went with her. I am confused what her motives are.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

I only learned about it when the deadline had passed. I also didn't know adriana was going until a few days ago.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

Well, did you tell her that? It was her fault and had nothing to do with you.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

She didn't really seem upset, she just said it's her fault for not having enough confidence to talk to people (the term she used was 'I need to man up and grow a pair').

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

I know. Some of the things she says are weird, some just creepy. She told me yesterday that she weirdly loves the feeling of doctors taking blood from her. I immediately thought of her self-harming past but I didn't bring it up and just made some vampire joke instead.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

Where is she going? 5 months is a long time. I could have 5 relationships in that interval.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

She is going to Warwick, of course.

The Warwick offer is A*A*A + 2 in STEP, or A*AA + 1 in STEP.

adriana is doing STEP I, the easiest paper, and will try to get a 2. However, in the event that she misses her offer, she doesn't want to go to her insurance choice (Durham) and says instead she'll take a gap year and re-apply.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

I'd say it's likely she'll get a 2 in STEP I, although I'm not sure. She said she wants to prepare properly this time because she messed up the MAT and so didn't get an interview for Oxford. But she should be aware that STEP is much, much harder to do well in than the MAT. To get a 2 in STEP I she would have to only answer correctly 2-3 questions in the whole paper, which is not *that* difficult, but I don't know how good she is. She has only done 10 questions in preparation so far, and there are 1167 in total... then again, I have not done loads either, only 241.

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formula

I've heard of one woman who got 1,1 in STEP II and III starting preparation only 10 days in advance, but she was on the IMO team anyway so I'm not really surprised. There are 66 days left until STEP I, personally I think that's plenty of time, but she could very well fail.
