Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaCould be, although I haven't been taught geometry for about 3 years now. Whenever I solve a geometry problem I don't really seem to care that much... I am just not a good spatial thinker, I don't often try to visualise problems, which seems to be one of the aims of geometry. #9777 20130403 05:49:52
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 Formulageogebra turns it into a drawing problem. No spatial nonsense, no mere memorization of theorems, it becomes an interactive game. The problems seem to solve themselves. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #9778 20130403 07:08:11
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaIt's a shame we can't use these for our exams. #9779 20130403 07:13:34
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaExams are only a small part of your life. When you get into a job that is technology oriented you will see them widespread. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #9780 20130403 07:21:56
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaIn the meantime, 45 more years of exams coming right up... #9781 20130403 07:24:28
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaTrue. While it is true that in some cases the best students are also the brightest, it is sometimes not true. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #9782 20130403 08:10:35
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaLots of people can get 95+ in their maths exams, but barely understand the material at all. For instance, adriana even admitted this to me; all she just did was lots of exam papers, memorising the type of question, and learning how to cater to the mark scheme. That's how it works these days. adriana showed me lots of fancy books in her room she had bought about the Riemann hypothesis and the Riemann zeta function. So I asked her to tell me what the zeta function was. She could not tell me! According to her it was "something to do with encryptions"... #9783 20130403 08:18:20
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaThey call it "teaching to the test" over here. It means students are taught what they need to pass their exams. There is no comprehension of the material. Teachers who complain are fired or censored. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #9784 20130403 08:25:41
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaThe playing field is more uneven than ever before. #9785 20130403 08:40:46
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaThe effects here have been drastic. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #9786 20130403 08:47:47#9787 20130403 08:51:29
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaWe have slipped from number #1 in science and math to around #30 in both. The country is full of people who can not add or subtract. The entertainment industry encourages children to be stupid because anything is better than being a nerd. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #9788 20130403 11:26:37
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaThis is the 21st century... these days it is considered good to be bad at maths. #9789 20130403 13:29:00
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaYes, I know. Why is it they encourage kids to be biologists and doctors and lawyers but it is cool to be ignorant of mathematics? In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #9790 20130403 19:10:09
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaToday you are judged by your usefulness to the economy. #9791 20130403 19:19:14
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaTrue, why should someone know more math than it takes to tally up his bill? In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #9792 20130403 19:24:31
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaAnything else is considered unnecessary... "just more esoteric, weird maths". #9793 20130403 19:32:19
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaTrue, but you have a new toy to play with that will occupy your mind. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #9794 20130403 19:36:54
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaAre you talking about Maxima or one of the girls? #9795 20130403 19:45:27
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaMaxima of course! That should occupy you for awhile. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #9796 20130403 19:50:44#9797 20130403 20:07:10
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaYou can just play with it and have fun. Or you can leave it till you need it. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #9798 20130403 20:51:37
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaOkay, but I have a feeling it will be like trying to start a fire with two twigs... #9799 20130404 01:03:12
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaAnother daffy reply. Do they really believe the things they say? In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #9800 20130404 01:15:29
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaShe is at least as well off as PJ. Not as mean though. Well, at least now I have thoroughly used up the pool of girls in my school, with the exception of R although I'm not pursuing her anymore. So, only Katie and Hannah remain.
