Yes, because basically to knock out a permutation you just divide by a factorial.

I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it.

I wish I could read it now but schoolwork has been hectic. Teacher not making sense with deadlines.

A boy in my physics class a few weeks ago said to me "so... how's F?". He knows that I used to like her, he doesn't know about anything that happened between us though. Ever since then though, whenever I am in a lonely spot for a while my mind still wanders back to her, or sometimes to adriana or C or other girls in the past, it is irritating. Seems like rejections are difficult to forget about but the slightest thing brings them right back up again.

They fade after time, but they do not disappear.

It's a lot easier if I have another prospect. Holly (the girl I talked to a lot over the weekend) doesn't even seem to like maths even though she wants to do it at uni. I think she is only doing it because it's the only subject she is able to get an A or B in. She stopped talking to me after she got bored of me, obviously.

Bored? How do you know that?

Stops asking questions, gives closed responses, fake 'interest' in what you said (like when someone just says 'cool'). Will just have to wait for someone new.

That does look like boredom. Why does she do well in math when she does not like it?

It is an easy subject, A-level Maths. No understanding of concepts needed at all.

So she just want A's? No interest at all?

If there is interest then there isn't much. She said that when she wants to go to uni she wants to try and see if she can take modules from other courses, like politics or geography, although she has applied for straight maths.

Won't the math toughen up on her now?

In my school, people wanting to do maths at university typically take on 12 modules at school to get A-levels in Maths and Further Maths.

Holly has only completed 3 modules so far and is trying to do 6 more by June. She has got through most of them in class, but she doesn't show much interest. However, my friend applying for maths is doing the standard 12 across two years. You can do 18 modules to get a third A-level, but that is only for weirdos like me.

She is very strange. But I guess it takes all types of people to make the world.

I guess she is just not as dedicated a mathematician as others...

Usually people can only excel at things they enjoy.

adriana enjoyed mathematics. That took up a fair chunk of our conversation. I guess that's why I get along well with female mathmos; that is mostly the only thing we have in common.

I think having a lot in common with a girl is a myth. I think it is impossible.

Certainly for me, anyway.

adriana just replied:

"Sorry I've taken so long to reply. I've been very busy. The wedding was incredible. Best wedding ever. How have you been?"

Why is it the best wedding ever? Because it was happening to someone else?

I don't know, I asked her, she hasn't responded yet...

I just came back from the Weinberg lecture at Imperial. I thought it was great at first but then he spent the last 25 minutes just going on and on about Israel and politics and Jews and everyone in the audience was getting annoyed -- it was supposed to be a physics lecture, and it seemed like he was just using it to promote his own views. Almost like he hijacked the lecture just to talk about that, and it was just silly, that's not what 1000 people came to hear. At least the refreshments were good.

Also, he seems like a great speaker on YouTube but he wasn't that great in person. Many, many awkward 15-second pauses, seemed like he was unprepared. Flashes of good stuff but I thought it would be better. Oh well...

Hi;

That is interesting, He does sound articulate on prepared documentaries. There are others that are unprepared and really do need a script.

I am not going to be able to talk right now, I am heading out to get some soda and some other things. Hopefully see you then.

But the documentaries I have seen him in were carefully prepared and edited. The question is, how can he be unprepared to talk about his life work?

It was strange... maybe because of his age? He is 80 this year.
