It should not have had that effect. She was more frightened of it than you could ever be. If it is any consolation to you, I know two girls that are both very good at math and neither of them can stand me. I like both of them but one dumped me and the other will not even talk to me.

Perhaps. A mathematician is meaner than a starved pit bull. When girls do math it makes them ornery.

That is what I would expect too. Instead you described her as really shying away from you after that. For some reason she had an extreme reaction.

Looks like that no one has ever asked her before. She was startled and maybe even extremely bothered by it. Or maybe that has happened to some other guy too.

That is a possibility. But only if you do not appear too wimpy. Girls change their mind. They do not know what they really want. Also, some of them like to be asked more than once. I hate to tell you that for fear of how you will interpret it. But I have had 2 or 3 girls say I gave up too easily.

Perhaps she is waiting for you to speak first. That is why they are so difficult. They hand out small signs that are difficult for us to pick up on. When we miss them, they always blame us.

Yes, but if she is hanging just inches from you ( your own words ) and sitting in your line of sight, there is a small chance she is trying to attract your attention.
