Well, it would be easy if the girls I talked to liked maths, but obviously they don't. So I have to talk about their career ambitions, what A-levels they're studying, what school they went to, things like that. And they ask me the same. Eventually I just run out of things to say, because I do not watch movies, TV, or listen to much music. I watch a lot of tennis but nobody seems to like it. So sometimes I make up stories. But this gets old fast. I know they lose interest when they move to talk to someone else, start playing on their phone, etc... general signs they couldn't give a darn what I'm about to say next.

I am doing what I can with the girls I have to work with. It is difficult to talk about myself, because for the most part my life is pretty academic and hardly social. I understand that I may be confusing disinterest with frustration (H was frustrated with me about my conversational skills at one point), but I think the signs I mentioned (playing with phone instead) are most likely signs of disinterest.

Why on earth do you think they are not talking to you for the same reason? Girls ignore completely guys they are not considering for intimacy or even more. They do not talk to them. Girls are very similar to guys in this respect, although they are less honest about it. Here we have an advantage. Men know what they want, women rarely are so sure.
