Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaI don't know, it is compulsory. She also had a differential equations lecture today too. All first-years have to do the compulsory timetable as listed at least. #4902 2012-10-03 03:29:01
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaToo bad you could not be there as a heckler. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. I am willing to wager that over 75% of the new words that appeared were nothing more than spelling errors that caught on. #4903 2012-10-03 03:31:52
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaYes, but I probably wouldn't do it, as that'd make a whole load of people upset... #4904 2012-10-03 04:33:55
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaAlso, I had a thought today, about complex derivatives. As we recall, you can use the gamma function to find the ith derivative of a function (such as a polynomial). It follows that if you take the ith derivative, and then take the (1-i)th derivative of that, that is the same as taking the first derivative (and very easy to prove). #4905 2012-10-03 06:15:15

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaTaking the ith derivative is itself doable: But it is doing that i times which is the issue. #4908 2012-10-03 06:32:28
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaOf course doing this would require computation if i!, which can be written in the form of a + bi, but a and b are irrational and only expressible with infinite series. However, taking the absolute value of it yields a much nicer value for i!: #4909 2012-10-03 06:34:18

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaYou mean, taking the ith derivative of x^k again? If we do that n times; and letting n = i yields which seems to reduce to since gamma(k+1)/gamma(k+2) = k!/(k+1)! = 1/k... But this then seems quite strnage, because the denominator should equate to k+1 if this is true (we are integrating x^k here using differentiation). But I do not see how that infinite product will approach that. #4911 2012-10-03 06:51:11
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaAt the moment, I do not know if I have made any sense at all, or if I have just said a bunch of meaningless mumbo-jumbo... #4912 2012-10-03 06:53:32

Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaOkay, let me know what you get. #4914 2012-10-03 07:16:41
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaYes, do that. Might bring an interesting turn of events. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. I am willing to wager that over 75% of the new words that appeared were nothing more than spelling errors that caught on. #4915 2012-10-03 07:27:08
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaUnfortunately we won't be alone, we will be in the maths office. But at least there will not be any Cs and Fs in there. #4916 2012-10-03 07:48:35
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaSounds interesting. You could all listen to F give her lecture in person. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. I am willing to wager that over 75% of the new words that appeared were nothing more than spelling errors that caught on. #4917 2012-10-03 08:00:17
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaF giving lectures...? Why would F be giving lectures? #4918 2012-10-03 08:09:29
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaLIke the one she is giving at Cambridge. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaHuh? F is not giving lectures, she is only a student. She is receiving them and will be for at least the next 4 years... #4920 2012-10-03 08:15:11
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaOh, I am sorry. I thought they had her giving the lecture. Sort of like an exercise. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. I am willing to wager that over 75% of the new words that appeared were nothing more than spelling errors that caught on. #4921 2012-10-03 08:17:24
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaI think you are allowed to do that after your 4th year but I am not sure. #4922 2012-10-03 08:20:31
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaTalking is okay just as long as there is no tears or weeping. In mathematics, you don't understand things. Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaI am not weeping, I just still feel disappointed somewhat, since I never got to talk to her properly, not even about maths. #4924 2012-10-03 08:26:34
Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaIt takes two to make a conversation. Maybe you will find someone else interested in math. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. Re: Linear Interpolation FP1 FormulaBefore I asked her out she would have happily talked to me. She even used to smile at me if she saw me. |
