Re: 0.9999....(recurring) = 1?

A, B, or (exclusively) C needs to increase by .1.  Why do you ask?  What does this have to do with anything?

Re: 0.9999....(recurring) = 1?

To Ricky etc...

Ok so Now we Both agree on something!

A = 0.3
B = 0.3
C = 0.3

A + B + C = 0.9 "Needs 0.1 to Equal 1"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a Fraction Calculation

A = One 3rd
B = One 3rd
C = One 3rd

A + B + C = 1 "This I am sure you agree! is true! and needs no other numbers to = 1"

Ok according to your Quote below!

"Sorry to burst your bubble ARB, but decimal calculations are defined in a very strict sense so that they behave exactly (no if's, and's or but's) as your "normal calculation"."

Can you give me Three Decimal Values! so that the Variables A , B  & C Below also need no other numbers to = 1

A = (Decimal Value)

B = (Decimal Value)

B = (Decimal Value)

Using the Three Decimal Values A,B & C above you have put forward! must equal 1

A + B + C = ?

To luca-deltodesco

A = 0.3

B = 0.3

C = 0.3

A + B + C = 0.9

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was waiting for the Answer! Ricky etc..  A = 0.3  B = 0.3  and  C = 0.4

"That's a Shame! because then I was going to Hit yer with the Answer Below!!"

ALL THREE DECIMAL VARIABLES A,B & C MUST HAVE THE SAME DECIMAL VALUES!

A = (Decimal Value)

B = (Decimal Value)

B = (Decimal Value)

Using the Three Decimal Values A,B & C above must equal 1

0.3 and 0.333...(recurring) are both totally different. Using the former, you will never get any closer one. However, using the latter, you will always, infinitely, be approaching 1.

Re: 0.9999....(recurring) = 1?

Clearly, ARB has at least some familiarity with algebra.  To me, this means that he must at least know that 0.3 is not the same as 0.33 is not the same as 0.333...  But by his words in his last post, he in fact thinks 0.3 is the same as 0.333...  Thus, contradiction, and therefore ARB does not exist.

QED.

Re: 0.9999....(recurring) = 1?

Since all three variables must have the same value:

and you question is: if A+B+C equals 1, what is A, B and C? The following is true:

So let's solve for A:

And since A=B=C, they're all 0.333... or written as a fraction 1/3.

Now; where is your problem?

Re: 0.9999....(recurring) = 1?

I guess you're trying to create a numberline, but the N4-thing I don't get. There's no such thing as a maximum amount of decimals. That's like saying there's a "biggest number".

edit: Do'h, it's not like saying there's a "biggest number", it's exactly that. We all know there's no such thing.

You are trying to mix Fractions! with Decimals Again!!

You are allowed to do that! 0.333... and 1/3 are two different representations of the same number! And there are further representations of them that "look" different (i.e. it's a different picture/symbol), for example in different bases - 0.333... or 1/3 looks like 0.1 in base 3 arithmetic!

So here, in base 3, the decimal expansion of 1/3(base 10 representation of "3") has a finite number of digits. What do you make of this?

Is that all this argument has been? Anthony, do you think that 1/3 and 0.333... are actually different numbers? What about 1/2 and 0.5, are they different? Or 1/4 and 0.25?

A.R.B:
It's not two different representations of the same number! or Numbers! We! are After! It,s Accuracy!

Unless you can Answer the Below! you have no case!

A = 0.3
B = 0.3
C = 0.3

A + B + C = 0.9

A = (Decimal Value)
B = (Decimal Value)
B = (Decimal Value)

Anthony, you're making even less sense than usual! 0.333... is 100% accurate as a decimal representation of 1/3.

So we can use it above - A = B = C = 0.333... - now, because of this, and the afforementioned accuracy of 0.333..., we see that A = B = C = 1/3.

And to your other post in the other thread - it makes no sense! You keep trying to say that 0.9 is between 0.999... and 1, when it clearly isn't!

And you call 0.9999... an "infinite number" - it may have an infinitely long decimal expansion, but it is certainly finite in itself.

I seriously think you are getting confused between a number and a representation of a number. For example, pi has an infinite decimal expansion. I could start writing it out if I wanted to get accross what I mean, or I could simply write:

One is an "infinitely long" representation of pi, the other is a succinct, explicit way of representing the same number.
So, I ask you, is 3.14... an "infinite number" (as you would say) even though it can be represented by a single charachter?

A + B + C = 1

Here is a Decimal Calculation!

None of this changes the fact that there are no Single decimal Values that = One 3rd
