How about mentioning where you are stuck. Then you can get help.

@holly: Order doesn't matter because addition is commutative, but you cannot put opposite+adjacent=hypotenuse
You can switch opp and ad, but hyp you can not.

ummm this person is wrong. the real equation you use is a²+b²=c²
so yeah all those people that you helped probably got the question wrong. Here is the right equation to try and help everybody!

Re: finding the missing side of a triangle

Hi kgk;

Welcome to the forum.

3daniel is not incorrect. Just a little unorthodox in his use of letters.

a^2 = b^2 + c^2 is not incorrect as long as you put the 2 sides in b and c and solve for a.

Re: finding the missing side of a triangle

Hi :-P;

Welcome to the forum!

The formula for the area of a triangle is:

Now just plug in for what you have:

Times both sides by 2.

So h or the height is 16 ft.

Hi jackie21137;

Welcome but I am sorry his answer is correct and yours is not. You are not using the pythagorean theorem correctly.

Please be more careful and tactful in correcting previous posts.

Hi Star1400000

Welcome to the forum!

I suppose that the trianglw you are talking about is a right triangle.

Do you know the Pythagorean theorem?

So by following the formula given before:

Where:

a and b are the sides and c is the hypotenuse.

So you have sides a=12 and b=9.

im stupid
it took me forever to figure this out

I have edited the post you refer to as you are quite correct; it was wrong mathematically.

But I have also removed your remarks as they were also unnecessarily rude.

Re: finding the missing side of a triangle

I don't know if I can explain my question properly but if someone understands please help!! Ok so the directions say Find the length of AB to the nearest hundredth centimeter.  All measurements are in centimeters, but figures may be drawn to different scales. Explain your reasoning.

The first problem is a rectangle  and it has a dotted line going from the bottom of the left corner (it has an A right next to it) to the top of the right corner ( it has a B right next to it). The bottom lenght of the rectangle measures 1.2 and the right side measures .8. The dotted line in the middle forms two triangle in the rectangle. Please someone help me!

Re: finding the missing side of a triangle

Hi Gillian__Smartiee;

I have drawn your rectangle below, click on it to enlarge it. If my drawing is correct then to find AB you use the pythagorean theorem where c is AB.

Take the square root of both sides,

So AB = 1.4422205101 cm.

Do you know how to round that to the nearest hundredth?
