Re: Subtraction

If you count left 7 from 5 on the number line where would you be?

Re: Subtraction

Hi;

If you had 5 dollars and your bills were 7 dollars do you not owe 2 dollars? Owing money is one practical use of negative numbers.

Did you read this?

http://www.mathsisfun.com/number-line.html

It is pretty well explained out with nice diagrams. There you will see what I meant by counting left.

Re: Subtraction

Adding a -7 is the same as subtracting 7.

5 - 7, count back 4,3,2,1,0,-1,-2 so 5 - 7 = -2

Re: Subtraction

Yes, forward the numbers get larger which is what we expect when we add positive numbers. If I have 10 apples and I collect 5 more, I expect to have more apples.

Re: Subtraction

Subtraction is like taking away so we expect to have less. Going  left or backwards the numbers get smaller so when you subtract you can use the number line and go left.

Re: Subtraction

We never add in subtraction because even when we add a negative to a positive we are really subtracting 2 positives.

Re: Subtraction

Of course we can. The number line is just a tool to illustrate the rules of arithmetic.

Very few people do. It is only used as a teaching aid.

Re: Subtraction

Positive and negative are not equal. -6 and +6 are definitely not the same.

Who says we prefer negative? Please show an example of what you mean.

If 4 people owed 6 dollars each how much do they all owe together. What do you think?

Re: Subtraction

A loan is like owing money, you must pay it back.

You borrow 6 pens from your friend and you do this 4 times. Suddenly, he says to you that he wants all 36 of the pens you borrowed from him back and he wants them now. Would you pay him?

That is correct, how many did you really borrow?

Re: Subtraction

That is correct.

Because each time you borrowed 6 pens. You did this 4 times. 4 x (-6) = - 24. You owed (minus sign means owe ) 24 pens.
