Re: Permutations

I proved myself the King of Idiots by proving him an idiot, which is no honor.

Re: Permutations

You are correct.

Re: Permutations

You ruined some gamblers with Experimental Mathematics. You claim it to be not a good idea.

Re: Permutations

Gambling is the wagering of money or something of material value (referred to as "the stakes") on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money and/or material goods. Gambling thus requires three elements be present: consideration, chance and prize.

When you eliminate the uncertainty and chance, you are no longer gambling. You are earning a certain amount each hour, just like a wage. This is all clearly defined in the laws of expectation.

Re: Permutations

Stolen is a figure of speech. I never stole anything in my life, I do not believe in it. The morality of playing with people who are gambling while you are not may be questionable, I am not sure even today. It is true that mathematically they had no chance to win but that was only because they refused to play and study mathematics and computers as I did. They could have and their decision not to was one of free will.

Re: Permutations

The morality isn't in question. They were willing to put their money as a bait and there was no rule against using EM.

Re: Permutations

They were trying to win my money but using expectation the game became no different than chess. The better player wins, there is no element of chance and therefore no gambling.

Re: Permutations

That is okay. The question was whether it was morally correct... Back then I went with my gut on such decisions. If something bothered me after doing it, I would consider it morally wrong and would not do it anymore. But in this case, I had a different emotional reaction. But whatever, I learned much mathematics from DS, one of the finest teachers I have ever known.
