Is there such a function?

Is there an infinitely differentiable function which is positive on (0,1) and 0 elsewhere?

Re: Is there such a function?

Hi;

Yes, there is.

Re: Is there such a function?

You have to figure it would involve e^x:

#11 is the one.

I remember being told a story of a engineer who mentioned how these guys were always writing formulas on the blackboard that did not work. The same still goes today, I would check that.

Re: Is there such a function?

Hm, interesting. So how does one go about finding such a function?

It works, but I don't know how they got it.

I could not get it to work, how do you interpret that expression.

Sometimes, they are discovered and sometimes possibly derived.

Re: Is there such a function?

Okay, it says that only in the open interval (0,1) does it equal that. How about when x = 11 / 10?

Book says it is supposed to be 0, but it ain't.

Got to eat this mush I made. Good to see you.

Yes, it is defined that way.

Re: Is there such a function?

How can you use that as the function you seek?

Take a look at this:

N[Exp[-1/(x^2 (1 - x)^2)] /. x -> (11/10), 500]

That outputs a small, small number but it is not 0.

And

N[Exp[-1/(x^2 (1 - x)^2)] /. x -> (15/10), 500]

which is close to 1 / 6.

I know I am making a mistake somewhere but I am blind.

Re: Is there such a function?

Thеy did not define it as

on the whole
, but rather on (0,1). It's a piecewise defined function.

Re: Is there such a function?

Because it wouldn't be differentiable.

Still the same answer. The derivatives all need to be continuous.

Just found this:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bump_function

Re: Is there such a function?

2) Is there a function with uncountably many strict extremal points?

Re: Is there such a function?

Strict, not strictly.

E.g. point x is a strict local maximum of the function f if there is a neighbourhood of x such that for each point y in that neighbourhood, f(y)<f(x).
